From 75cl, quick decant and ready to roll. As previously noted, a burly, rustic Cabernet with plenty of guts, tannin, dark indeterminate fruit and spices as noted on 12.10.2019. This won't improve, so drink up your stocks over the next 1-2 years. 88-89P

From 75cl, good cork, quick decant. Thickset, surly St. Estephe with the character of a stern Ulster Unionist politician lecturing all comers about something only he cares about. Dark blackberry fruit hiding behind a stern tannic wall; dense Northern (Médoc) seriousness and furry tannic grip on the finish. Juniper berries, stern anise, dried cumin seeds. A fine, truly respectable, oui - vraiement bourgeois - drink, one to put to battle with fatty, rich lamb (rather than the delicate beef fillet I mistakenly served it with this evening). 88P

From 75cl, perfect cork. Decanted 1 hour, best directly on opening. Almost exactly as noted on 02.12.2017, but with air it became very soft and plush, all velvet and soft black fruit. Lovely stuff, no hurry, but I do recommend P+P. 89-90P

From 75cl, OK to rough cork. Decanted 1 hour. Surly, closed, big, inexpressive, fairly tannic profile, more like a closed young Morgon or Moulin à Vent (with Cabernet character, bien sûr) than a 15 y.o. Cru Bourgeois Médoc. My inner sommelier had an off night: This was a lousy match with lasagne – steak or rare lamb would have been a lot more appropriate. Lots of bottles of this in CT cellars, I look forward to seeing when people drink theirs and what they have to say about them. I think there may be an upside. 88P

Decanted an hour or so before drinking. Still quite deep colour, not much on the nose, very restrained some hints of fruit.
Tannins still much in evidence on the palate like many St Estephe, and probably dominating the fruit, which was in the background. Not much depth, and a bit green at time still. A good enough bottle, quite refreshing, and went well with roast beef, but too tannic for the cheese. Archetypal old fashioned claret I think. Will probably keep going for a bit more yet, but the 2002 is better in my view.

From 75cl, perfect cork. Nose to tail St. Estèphe typicity and pleasure, accurately recorded in several previous CT TNs (although "Dancing with bottles" obviously had something else in their glass on 25.01.2016). This is thick, concentrated, extracted, bourgeois St. Estèphe in early adulthood: Plenty of fruit, lots of cedar, touches of menthol and plenty of dark fruit and melting, still youthful tannin. This bottle only recently entered its drinking window, and would have had at least 5-10 years to go. Pro reviewers who claimed the 2004 should be drunk within 5-7 years of release might have been suffering from a few too many free invitations to Cos, Calon and/or Montrose. If, like me, you actually pay for the wine you drink, this is about as good a QPR as it gets. 90P
Kept under condition 2 from spring 2008, under condition 1 since September 2012. Nose: red berries and some clear floral notes. Taste: smoke, red berries, some stable, a slight hint of licorice. Just slightly astringent tannins. Mature but still with quite clear fruit. At the second day refined cherry-liquor and a nice mature note in the nose. Supple and really nice. Might be kept for another one or two years. 90.

Kept under condition 2 since 2008, under condition1 since september 2012 (see my profile). Popped and poured. Color: dark ruby-purple with orange rims. Excellent nose with mature notes, above all cigar box. Taste: again mature notes, with iodine, some dark fruit and tobacco. Nice complexity. Medium bodied. Only in the beginning a bit thin, but after all very nice! 90.

Kept under condition two from 2008 until 2012, under condition one since 2012 (see my profile). Nose: smoke and leather. Taste: nice blue- and blackberry fruit, but mature notes like leather, and smoke were more prominent. The mid-palate was a bit hollow, like other TN-writers have mentioned before. At the second day the nose had more fruit, the taste was more complex, like tannins still had been resolved since the first day. At the second day: a delicious, rather classy, mature wine. Maybe it will benefit from further aging, but I will drink my last bottles within the next two years, because I fear the loss of fruit. First day (88-)89 second 90.

Decanted for about an hour. Really nice development with quite a lot of toasted oak notes, although presented in a restrained manner. Mid-weight and enjoyably transparent, with more structure than fruit, which we really appreciate in a food context, and a typically dry, salty mineral finish with so-so length. Thumbs up and no complains really, and highly functional in a steak frites béarnaise context. Should develop well for another five years, and maybe more.

Last of the case. Really enjoyable. Rounded, balanced, signature bdx. Tones of cassis, soil and old leather. Straightforward and unpretentious; delivers classic left bank with understated class. Tannins have completely dissolved, and offer a soft and velvety mouthfeel. Still plenty of structure, though. Over the years had found some of the bottles a bit lacking/thin in the mid-palate, but this was very nicely poised. Would have thought easily another 5 years ahead.

Nose: mature notes with an ethereal, mint-like note. Taste: mature notes, nice black and red berry fruit, green pepper, coffee and some chocolate. Rather rich. Quite friendly and round, which is typical for Medoc 2004, but unlike other Medocs of that year that I have drunk, quite much depth. Very good wine. (Was coup de coeur in Guide Hachette 2008 with three stars.) To drink until 2018. 89.

An evening with the whole family: chosed this vintage of Bordeaux cause its more opened and easy drinking for everyone........., still some grainy tannin, good food wine, a lot of cassis in the nose and on the palate, nice parfumed smell, midweight body, overall not very complex, long, some years to go but no long-distance runner, **(+), 86- 88+?

Popped and poured. Not much of a nose. Taste: above all nice mature notes with laurel and forest floor. Just the amount of fruit for making it complete. At the first day maybe a little bit thin, but well integrated, quite soft, and classy. The friendly character of Medoc 2004 is here in the softness of the wine, not that much in the fruitiness. Unlike the first time, this bottle has impressed me. The good terroir that this chateau is said to have available, is noticeable in this wine. Very good. Ready to be drunk, but maybe there still is some upward potential. To be drunk within two or three years, I guess. 89-90.

Demands a decant. At first opening tight, acidic, and not very interesting. As it opens up, there are leather, currant, and herbal notes that become more integrated over time. I think this is good for another 5 years, and for now do yourself a favor: decant.

Leafy, forest aromas, with tobacco and dried fruit, the wine is medium bodied and a bit dry and dusty in the red berry finish. This is probably drinking at peak and requires consumption over the next 3-5 years.

We decanted the wine for 90 minutes. It was dark ruby in colour and offered dark flowers, black currant, blackberry, cherry, some chocolate, cedar, leather and tobacco leaf on the nose. On the palate the wine showed dark flowers, black currant, blackberry, cherry, cedar, leather, tobacco, some liquorice and some vegetal notes, with lively, medium-plus acidity, medium-fine, medium-plus tannin and very good length. The medium-bodied wine had good complexity and was reasonably balanced, but even after ninety minutes in the decanter it came across as a little harsh, rustic and tannic. The wine became juicier and drank best after about three hours in the decanter.

The nose has some real elegance - rich cassis fruit, some tobacco leaf, old leather. Classic left bank. Tanins are still very well structured and fine, but... fruit and acidity are starting to fade. Has a slight sourness and palate feels a bit vacant. This might hold for a while but not sure this improves from here.

Kept under condition 2 from autumn 2008 until september 2012, after that under condition 1 (see my profile). Colour: quite dark ruby-purple. Nose: fine barnyard, some very nice berry-fruit. Taste: some good black and blue berry-fruit, good acidity. Although there is no harshness, the wine tasted quite tannic. Medium body, short finish. This wine has a fine, soft structure, that was remarkably better then the most Medoc-wines I have tasted so far. That suites the status of Cru Bourgeois Exceptionelle in the 2003 Cru Bourgeois classification of this chateau as well as its terroir, near to chateau Montrose, but this bottle lacked real concentration and above all: fruit. (According to the chateau in 2008 this wine should be kept 7-10 years under good conditions.) 87(-88).

On the plus side, this is very well structured. Tanins are taught but integrated and acidity remains fresh, lively. There is a classic Bordeaux left bank nose, full of tobacco leaf, cigar box, forest floor. However, this '04 has bantam weight fruit. There really isn't the ripeness and fullness to fully fill its own frame. There isn't the fruit to complement the nose, which in itself is charming but mid-weight. This feels like a wine which in a good year with ripe fruit can produce a gorgeous dollop of St Estephe loveliness. In the meantime, the '04 is perfectly drinkable and enjoyable, but doesn't knock my socks off.

Red at the rim, tending to black at the core - cedar and dark fruits on the slightly shy nose. Light to medium bodied, graphite, cocoa and a little fruit on the palate, a trifle dilute, integrated and largely resolved tannins. Nice, pleasant and all the other adjectives that damn with faint praise.

Spannend.

Not going to rate this given conditions I tasted this in but throwing my 2 cents in. ordered this at a steakhouse bar on a 50% discount night. the bartender butchered it by shaking the bottle about and then pouring two huge glasses (very disappointing service) without giving the proper respect to the wine. After even an hour open this St Estephe was a monster. red cherry, cassis, black raspberry, blueberry, brooding plum. only showing hints of secondary leather and anise. would let this decant for hours. it's a monster and needs another 10 years at least to come around. classic st estephe.

First tasting out of a few btls, from .375. Tight colour, pleasant fruity nose, sweet and lasting red fruits, gentle and fine tannins, on the classic side. Good showing from a 2004. Will even wait another year with next bottle. Decanted for 1 hr. 90+

Very bright and youthful nose with blackcurrants, cassis, pencil led, and toasted bread. Medium-body; currant/cassis, dark chocoloate and coffee with nicely integrated. Again a really good 2004 ready to drink and more decently priced than the 09s and 10s. Unfortunately the last bottle...

Le Salon du Vin de la Revue du Vin de France 2012 (Brussels): Black fruit and some soft oak, nicely opened. Very round on the palate with subtle hints of chocolate and softened tannins. Well-balanced and multi-layered, definitely showing very well at the moment.

Brilliant medium purple/ruby, young looks. Clean, youthful and polished nose with medium intense aromas of fudge, blackcurrants, cassis, pen ink, toasted oak, spice, gravel, grass and bell pepper. Taste is medium-bodied, youthful and fresh with little in the way of development. Fruity currant/cassis flavours, lighter tannins but the mouthfeel still is extracted. Also quite a lot of dark chocolate, some coffee and a slightly green and refreshing finish. Okay modern saint-estèphe although nothing special, needs a few hours to soften. Better wait for more development around 2015-2016 or so, but don't expect miracles to happen. (87-88)

Popped and poured. Drank over 2 - 3 hours and kept improving. Colour is very clear, brigth with orange/brownish rim. Nose is berries, leather and cassice that follows to the palate - here (by the last glas...) a beautifull velvety feell to it - and in linger on and on...Very St. Estephe. I have come to like the 04s better and better; very classic and at a price which is much more decent. This was cheaper than the en primeur 09 or 10 that I would have to wait a decade on to get as good a wine....

I agree with most readers here that this vintage is ready to be drunk now. Not bad during pop and pour, but the chocolate emerges after around 60 mins in the decanter. This beats some normal GCC by far. Only draw back is that the edges are still a bit rough and too sharp for my taste. A good wine.

Appearance: Bright and clear, with deep intensity ruby colour, garnet rims and legs. Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity and developing aromas of blackberry, plum, cloves, cedar, oak, hints of smoke and leather. Palate: Dry, medium acidity, with medium tannin of ripe and dusty texture. Medium in alcohol, with medium (+) body and medium intensity flavors of blackberry, plum, prune, cedar and cloves. Medium length. Conclusion: Good quality Medoc red with a smooth texture and reasonable complexity. Fairly intense on the nose, showing good ripe fruit and sweet spice, typical left bank Bordeaux blend characters. The palate is reasonably intense, in balance, and the wine is easy to drink, finishing with a reasonable length. Ready to drink now but can benefit from further ageing of another 5-7 years.

In Sept ’08 a first-night 84 pter: limited white choc and liqueur aroma… breathed to oily farmyard and watery cedar. Then, five days later, still low-ripeness but an astonishing shape in mouth – skyscraper heights. Tonight, at 2 hour decant the oily farmyard was indeed there; but I’d allowed 3.5 hours, whereupon that was gone! Fairly inexpressive, but a really lovely structure. Iron, yet freshness – Pauillac with more elegance. Just a mulled note that worries me faintly, but overall I think this is going to be really good. 89 on this night.

Medium ruby with slight fading of the edge. The nose boasts peppery notes, sweet berries (red), touch of earth and a vegetal edge. Medium body with good fruit...some depth in it. There's a small vegy suggestion and the all so present pepper but none distract. Tannins are fine but still unresolved and the acidity carries the wine into a medium, well crafted finish. Very classic and very pleasant/easy to drink...i would hold this bottle for a couple of years more to see if a better integration arouses.

WFA Bordeaux 2004 tasting by the Wine Review; 10/16/2008-10/17/2008 (Suntec City, Singapore): This was just alright. Closed on the nose which, after much swirling, just gave the impression of red and black fruits with just a touch of green. Simple palate, decent, with good freshness and acid. It again showed a little green fleck that wound its way to the finish, where it appeared almost weedy alongisde a slightlyt spicier pepper note. Still, there was some fruit locked up inside all that and a pretty balance. An okay wine. This needs quite some time yet. Very St Estephe in character indeed.

Anita: I mirror exactly the above description, even to the exact words when I started this note! However, although it is good, it is young, a bit too tannic w/food; very rich, and got just a bit lost in the BBQ ribs. A bit coarst t’s, and very earthy, with above fruits in there too. Good, but not a dazzler at mealtime.

Dark garnet, with lilac edge. Refreshing nose of sour cherry, flowers, fine spices, and smoke. Thick, compact, refreshing, clean fruit. Very elegant, inviting palate: warm, Cabernet-tinged with notes of tobacco, sweet, roasted plums, and bitter chocolate.. Rounded tannins, and wonderfully balanced, with alot of finesse. But also power. A very good 2004, with good potential.

Classic old world - rich in cassis and dark Berry but swaddled in leather and pencil shaving. Still very ruby and nice tannins. Still could go another year or two - not sure why drinking window is showing 2011 end...,
