Open and expressive on the nose, really pretty with earthy notes, red fruit, dark flowers, spices; quite layered and complex. On the palate a little drying towards the finish. Good fruit overall, nice acidity, spicy, a little stemmy. Intense finish, good length. Drink up. 91-93

Opened 30 minutes before tasting. Mature red cherry aromas and flavors with spice, earth and hints of autumn flowers. Good weight and length. Holding very well with even better balance. Last taste, 3+ hours after opening, was certainly the best.

Louis Jadot Tasting with Frédéric Barnier (Knightsbridge - Northbrook IL): Popped and poured, then served to today's tasting group. Almost fully mature red cherry with plenty of earth, along with spice hints and late summer flowers. Good weight and length, good+ balance. Another small pour an hour after it was opened seemed to show even greater depth.

My favorite of the 2002 Volany flight. Gorgeous, sexy aromatic of cherry liqueur and florals. Palate is smooth with good concentration. Loads of spice and florals on the long finish.

Color: Ruby core with a brick-tinged rim leading to clear meniscus. Smell: Roses, dried red fruits and earth. Taste: Dried red fruit, tomato leaf, and mushrooms. Overall: This is in a place where it feels like another 5 years in the cellar. While lovely now, it feels like it's ebbing between secondary and tertiary flavors...and has the stuffing to make 20 years with another 5+ years.

Medium garnet in color, some bricking. Medium bodied. Cherries and red fruit dominate. Some forest floor, spice, and vegetal notes as well. Medium+ acid, somewhat astringent. Low tannins. Medium finish. Seems disjointed. Not sure if further bottle age will improve this wine.

Open nose as Pn'P, red fruit predominant with a touch of black fruit and sous bois. Great balance on the palate, subtle red fruit, Asian spice, mushroom and that same earthiness. In a good place right now...

-- popped and poured -- -- tasted non-blind over a few hours --
NOSE: lots of cement mineral; moderate oak; smells ripe; hint of Moroccan spice blend; doesn’t really scream “Pinot” to me.
BODY: raspberry color of medium-light depth with some bricking at the edges; medium-light to medium bodied.
TASTE: good acid; fine, slightly drying tannins; fresh purple berries – starting to taste a little aged; moderate oak; touch of leathery funk; 13.5% alc. is slightly noticeable; with air, the flavors get a bit heavier and kind of muddled/lacking in detail; darker and heavier than I’d prefer; a touch gamey. Overall, not bad, but very forgettable.

Lots of red cherry aromas equally balanced with earthy character. Palate also had same red cherry, some mushroom flavors and good dried herb and licorice. Good support from the wine's structure and power. Perhaps not quite as good as it was a few years back, but this will hold well for quite a few years going forward.

Decent burgundy, on the light side (based on expectations from the price NOK 495). First aromas of flowers and raspberry. After a while more aged, meaty aromas. Not very complicated in the mouth, but decent acidity and nice tannins.
Probably not to be bought again. There is just as good standard bourgogne rouge around for half the price.

Core of red fruit (tart cherry) in both bouquet and taste. Nice complexity and balance. Underlying power and richness, which didn't, though, detract from the elegance. Seemed at or near its peak. Goegeous example of Cotes-de-Beaune. A-

Medium strawberry/ruby. Broad tapering rim has just a hint of orange to it. Full plummy Pinot nose with a nice, slightly volatile, flowery lift. That smooth pure Pinot fruit again on the mouth entry. Nicely cool and fills a little on the mid-palate - medium plus you might say. Well balanced and charming, and with good potential for development.

Wine was not decanted but was allowed to breathe for one hour. Initial fruit forward nose, cranberry/dark cherry, with earthy tones evolving with time. A pleasant, but not outstanding Pinot, featuring light red fruit, cherry and raspberry, short finish and good mouth feel due to medium acidity.

Opened last night and popped and poured, and it was very primary. Once again, I assume my 55 degree cellar keeps them nicely young and vibrant. Tonight, the wine shows a little less primary, with a hint of secondary aromas and flavors. Clearly a dark fruited example of Burgundy, which, based on my limited experience with Volnay is fairly typical. A little tight still on the nose, but a lot going on the palate. Just great blackberry and plum fruit that is focused and precise. Long, dry finish (not to be confused with drying) with some hoisin sauce in the back of the palate. This has quite a bit of tannin to resolve, I believe. This was a gigantic QPR in my opinion when I purchased the wine (around $30 per bottle). For me, this is just now entering its drinking window, but I believe it'll drink much better in 3-5 years. With that said, I like my wines with quite a bit of age, so your mileage may vary.

92+. Knockout nose that won't quit. Very powerful aromas of minerals, wild berries and earth, with secondary notes of smoke, coffee and perhaps a bit of baking spice and toast. Quite animalistic at first: meaty smell, with a distinct barnyard component, but this dissipates and integrates with time in the glass. Broad on the entry, with a powerful and persistent, albeit noticeably hot (esp at the back of the throat) finish. Fine tannins. Excellent acidity. At first seems a bit weak in the middle, at least in comparison to the attack and finish. Dry and tart at first. But over the course of 2 hours, the mid-palate really fills out, and the fruit gets fatter, riper, juicier and sweeter. Great sour cherry and red plum flavors, with occasional hints at strawberry and raspberry, and maybe a darker fruit as well (blackberry?) Lots of punch and power, but not without burgundian elegance. Very impressive. I love the minerality. I think this is just getting started. Probably should have waited. But I've got to get some burgundy tasting under my belt. . . . Even better the 2nd day. A bit less powerful, but smoother, better balanced and more elegant. Mid palate has come into its own. No more of that unpleasant heat on the finish.

Dark cherry color. Very intense nose with earth, underbrush, pine needles, cinnamon, mulberry, black cherry. Very nice balance on palate, ample bright red and blue fruits backed by minerals, earth and tangy acidity. Low tannin, a pleaser already. Tangy cinnamon and currant/blueberries on the finish.

Opened not decanted. A fragrent and subtle nose of flowers on opening. On the palate, strong spice, minerals (rocks, stones) some earth and citrus with a middle that abruptly stops short leaving a peppery (high alc) and drying finish. Fair to Good.

2002 Red Burgudy Tasting (Thyme - Chicago): Group ranked it 91 points and WOTFlight. Soft sweet cherry nose with oak, spice and some floral aromas. Palate followed the nose closely with added depth of black cherry, toast, baking spices and nice backbone of acid and tannins. Most felt it had great balance and got better the longer it sat in the glass. Some with more experience than I considered this textbook young Volnay. Scores of the nine tasters ranged from 90-92.
