Not much change from two years ago when I noted “nose of black cherry, sour cherry, herbs, and forest floor.” The very much captures the nose and palate of the wine. And what you detect on opening is what you’ll find in the last drop; just not much evolution over the course of the dinner even though the wine was decanted. Almost no sediment. 13.1% alc. With seared tuna under balsamic glaze with sautéed mushrooms which worked well with the wine. 05.02.24. Recommended.

My last bottle and it did not disappoint. First, these roses can go the distance. This bottle still had plenty of fruit and balanced acidity. Second, these roses are consistent. Nothing here that I haven't tasted before. Third, while there may not be "bottle sweetness" the wine does seem to develop a little heft; good weight. Last, these little roses are simply quaffable beauties. New World rose? Yes, but with a respectful nod to Tavel. Recommended.

12/26/2021 6:25:00 AM - Thank you for your note and your kind and courteous approach, fitzi. I appreciate it. I'm new here having finally migrated from using Cellar! software and didn't realize how much of my commentary was public. Yes, I am aware of the age-worthiness of Desvignes and other producers in Beaujolais. Generous friends have shared examples with me. But I have concluded that gamay is just one of those grapes that I just don't "get". Whether it is Steve Edmunds Bone-Jolly rosé or a gen from the Morgon, I'm unable to find pleasure in them. My loss, I guess. But thank you for reading my notes and for your response. Cheers.
11/29/2021 5:38:00 AM - Hey, Timewihtwine: your more than twice as prolific in note-writing than I am, and, therefore, I imagine, have more than twice as much experience.
On the subject of Desvignes Morgon, however, I think you'll find that your peers who are familiar with this cuvee rarely open a bottle before 10 years from vintage, except as a kind of experiment or early vintage sample. The 2005 vintage had more fruit and tannin than most years, and the bottle I opened in 2016 was only beginning to show signs of opening. Desvignes is a very highly respected vigneron in Morgon and aims for a 'traditional,' slow-developing, long-aging wine; comparable to, say, pre-millennium Faiveley Burgundies. Dismissing the 2005 as 'bad,' based on samples between 2007 and 2012 doesn't give it a chance to show properly on its own terms.
That said, I enjoyed your bundled notes on this wine and the Baudry cuvees; a rate opportunity to see time-series observations of single or family wines from one - experienced - taster in one place. Cheers.
2023 Ampelos Rosé of Syrah
5/10/2024 - timewithwine Does not like this wine:
A watermelon bomb.
7% Riesling blended with Syrah and Grenache. And that's all I have to say about that.
