  • 2017 Peju Province Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Persephone Vineyard

    Sight: Vibrant medium Ruby color

Nose: This was very closed at first, so I let it sit in the decanter for 2 hours and regularly agitated it. Afterwards, it blossomed like a flower in spring and I was very relived as I thought the wine may have been completely shut-down at first impression. The nose filled the air with Dark cherry cola, Bitter cocoa, Raspberry pop tart, and dusty oak with a wine wonderful touch of vanilla. I love that concentrated red cherry note I find in Peju and it’s here in full swing after two hours. I appreciate that it’s never medicinal always clear and focused like a fresh “Filthy” candied cherry for a old fashioned.

Taste: At first the tannins were way too tight and really gripped; the fruit wasn’t very focused. But yet again after two hours this completely transformed to the point someone who didn’t know about wine would of thought I served them something different haha. The wine became full and round on the palate with ripe tannins and a lush texture making it a joy to drink being 14.4% ABV. The fruit is fresh and focused like a raspberry torte, Dark cherry Cola, Cocoa nib dust, And vanilla. The acid really lifts providing focus and balanced everything making this complete with a delightful spice filled finished.

Overall: Classic Peju and if you like a red Fruit Cab with focus and freshness this will be a great wine for you! They are not shy on the Oak, which is French and American for 18 months but the wine holds it lavishly. I didn’t find this wine too dissimilar from their Rutherford expression as my notes for this almost lined up identically. The only thing I’m sure of is the Rutherford had more oak perception and 1 more month in new oak and it was noticeable. Overall great wine, especially in 2017 this hides the heat of the vintage well.

  • 2012 Domaine Carneros Le Rêve

    Opened for Mother’s Day:

Sight: Beautiful medium golden color showing it’s 12 years well

Nose: Yellow fruits, Golden apple, touch of brioche and some nutty honeyed notes. I see some nice development since I got this at the winery in 2018. I also find a very nice champagne like yeast and minerality character to the aroma but the ripeness keeps me in California.

Taste: The palate has an elegance the bubbles are fine and the textured palate is very good. Not overtly complex but clearly well made and enjoyable. Ripe Yellow apple, slightly oxidized pear, honeyed almond, and toasty with that yeast / minerality character. Matches the aroma quite closely and really feels like a champagne in Cali.

Overall: Saved this for a special occasion and everybody very much enjoyed the wine. I purchased when visiting the winery after tasting in 2018 and think it was very cool to relive the memory after 6 years with the family. A Great wine that we enjoyed a lot, and while being a sparkling wine from California this reminded me why I purchased this!

  • 2021 Zialena Zinfandel

Stock up on the 2021 this is a fantastic Expression!

Sight: Light Ruby color with Magenta reflections

Nose: This is a blast of red fruits like Dark cherry, raspberry pie, and plums. The spice is warming and equally filling the air of the concentrated aroma that gets me excited to taste. While not overtly complex this is like nailing the basics of what I want from a quality Zin in the aroma as it is not too jammy with good concentration and warming fruits/spices

Taste: This follows the nose perfectly which is always a great feeling when a wine can do that. The fruits is balanced nothing is flabby it’s well concentrated and really doesn’t show the alcohol too much but is warming. The acid keeps a good freshness and the spice lingers in the finish making this so good with a touch of that classic Zialena minerality/earthy character.

Overall: This is the best Zin I’ve tasted from Zialena Upon release besides the 2016. Truly put a smile on my face as this wine reminds me why I’m a member… The Mazzoni Clone Zin combined with great winemaking is on full display. I will be stocking up on the 2021 this is a fantastic wine that I imagine will be even better with 7 years of age; this Vino has the guts to make it easily. I just opened a 2015 and it was outstanding so makes me excited to try this in 7-9 years as I think it will be even better possibly.
