My first Emphase, which I had been hearing a lot about. It's a very distinctive and quite a lovely wine. On opening a little funk, and it shows some Côte de Nuit character, dark fruits, a little iron. As it opens, so pretty, moves in a Sonoma direction—in a good sense—but lacks the sweetness, just plush and haunting minerality in the long sweeping finish. A trace of the equivalent of mint plays off the stoniness, making this bottle remarkably refreshing and eminently quaffable.

Beautiful color of beef blood. Lovely Gevrey aromas of briar, sassafras, with maybe a whiff of barnyard. Definitely some tannin in the finish and acid in the midpalate (it is an ‘08). Lovely spice and density of material, especially for a village level wine. After time in the glass rounds out--delicious! And I am glad that I have another one to open 5-10 years from now.

Opened an hour ahead, but immediately recorked as nose was ebullient. On the pour, it was such a lovely glass of well-aged bordeaux; lots of cigar box playing through plum and blueberry. I did not detect the blood and iron notes that I sometimes find in this wine; but the midpalate was complex and the finish long. It's just entered its drinking window and surely stay there for a very long time.
