  • 2009 Château Sociando-Mallet

This cork was soft and wet to within a couple of millimeters of the capsule. Yet it was intact and the wine was magnificent. This wine may need--and will permit--many more years of cellaring to reach full potential, but it showed magnificently tonight, of the present and future. The bouquet alone was myriad: taut cabernet, sour pine smoke, lard. The bouquet has years of maturity ahead. The plate is perfectly balanced but a bit dry and a bit rough. Whether or not this could attain the glycerous smoothness of a top growth remains to be seen. But it is a wonderful expression of a classic Bordeaux. Excellent terroir married to an iconoclastic proprietor.

Good, and pretty typical of the vintage. Nice dark color, the nose is not of violets but of saddle leather and a touch of cedar. This is light- to middle-weight on the palate but shows good ripeness, and the wine has vigor. As an aperitif it's subtle. With a filet mignon finished in the oven, it's very complimentary. This has aged better than many might expect for the pedigree and the vintage. I have two more bottles and they can hold for a while, though I will probably drink them before more reputed wines of more reputed vintages.

  • 2005 Château Monbrison

A heavy hitter on release (I guessed it was Pauillac as against Haut Bages Liberal), I have not had this for many years. The cork separated at the mid point and I had to fish out the crumbly bottom. This tasted extremely bitter at first and I thought it was corked. But it didn't smell corked and I let it breathe for an hour. Well, this turned out very fine. It is a product of the vintage, with lots of baking spices (cinnamon, cardamon) in the bouquet and palate. Very dry but sweet, the dry sensation being a product of low acidity. Lots of suspended sediment (I stood it up for half a day). Bottom line is this was very enjoyable if not especially vinous as the acidity is a touch low. Drinking very, very well now. Will keep but why wait.
