  • Decanted for two hours in the morning, poured over dinner. Dark garnet colour, some fine sediment. Red fruit, black currant, blackberry, dark cherry, plum, milk chocolate, spices, herbal notes, some leather, some cigar tobacco, and gravelly minerality, with medium-level acidity, partly resolved tannin, and very good length. The medium-bodied wine was broader than expected, and did not possess the energy, structure and precision I had expected. That said, it showed good integration in day two, and drank well in that broader context. The wine should remain enjoyable for another ten years, but I do not expect it to improve and would drink now.

  • In memoriam Bordeaux tasting for Piet Kuiper (@ RvD): In the bouquet beautiful autumn impressions, mint, dark berries and oak. On the palate juicy red berries, beautiful red fruit acidity and mild tannin. The wine is fully mature and a real pleasure to drink.

  • Decent wine here with soft notes of warm terracotta tiles with a little tickle of herbal complexity cutting through. It actually has more grip than the 2005 that I find generally too soft. Looks like it is not going to improve and the colour indicates it is now starting to decline into late middle age.

  • Final bottle from a full case purchased at auction in 2010. Pristine condition, not decanted, opened three hours in advance. The previous bottles were all clean, clear and precise, slender (and on occasions borderline thin) but always transparent and fresh in their expression. This final bottle feels deeper and darker, softer and more rounded, with a finish that trails off a bit. Bottle difference, or is oxidation setting in? Drink up, if you have any left.

  • Absolutely a point. Quite dark color. Very serious and penetrating cabernet aromas. Lively palate that is more cutting than plush, and it follows the nose into cabernet and well-aged oak territory. Tannins are well in back and the structure is more of balanced acidity than tannic brawn. While I'm not one to doubt typicity in opposition to claims otherwise, I'm sure I couldn't tell a St. Estephe from a Margaux blind, but for some reason I would say this comes across more as a Pauillac than anything else. And damn good. Fifth of six bottles, this was a nice, well-fruited and even bumptious wine when younger and it has matured suavely.
