  • 2019 Domaine A.-F. Gros Moulin-à-Vent En Mortperay

Delicious as alway. 14 quid a bottle IB (recent vintages are a bit more). Fruity with some earthy notes. Bright strawberry on the nose and palate. Medium finish. Excellent.

  • 2018 Yann Durieux Black Pinot

Funky on opening with wild acidity. Bright fruit and pot pourri on the nose and lots of concentration. Weird.

Heaps of cassis on first taste which is surprising as this is supposed to be a classic style Pinot - the perfume hidden under the acid in the bouquet perhaps leads us back in that direction but this is all over the place. An absolute shitshow.
Into the decanter for a couple of hours…

An hour later and the wine is now sightly fizzy on the tongue. WTF. There are literally chunks of sediment floating around in it. At the bottom of the bottle is a residual paste of discarded yeast and goodness knows what else. It’s cloudy like the sea the morning after a storm. Is this a joke? 75 quid a bottle…

3 more hours later and it’s now back in the bottle. A tentative sip. Fingers are crossed. The acidity has tamed a lot, leaving behind dark cherry, violets, chocolatey notes and some tannins from the stems (I don’t think this has seen any oak). There’s the slightest hint of funk remaining on the nose but the wine has spread out into something much more conventional and it’s perfume is really showing. Layers upon layers of complexity. Long, bright, elegant finish that makes me want to keep coming back for more. It’s brilliant. Where the hell was this all hiding? The ugly duckling has finally turned into a swan.

What a transformation. I’m sorry Yann Durieux to ever have doubted you. Insane wine from an insane (and insanely talented) winemaker. Wish I had another bottle. Will enjoy the last glass. Cheers everyone.

Sodden corks and sticky residue on the bottle :-(

3/2/2024 11:07:00 AM - Hi. Is there anything in Tokyo similar to Takamura Wine & Coffee Osaka where one can drink wines from wine tasting dispensaries (machines) ?
