  • 2011 Antinori Tignanello

Not much change since my last review. Sangiovese dominant with some Cabernet Sauvignon, minimal cab franc. This is a delicious if not simple wine. Fruit forward with blackberry, cassis and ripe cherry. More red licorice and confectionery notes on the palate than I recall, light on the spice. I’ve tried coaxing more out of this wine by tasting it at varying periods over 5 hours of decant, but for me it plateaued at 2 hours. Drink.

  • 2003 Antinori Solaia

Good-bye to my last bottle of '03 Solaia - I will miss you (and so will my wife!). Tasted against other '03s from Dunn Howell Mtn and Calon Segur as per notes from #1 or #2 below. The bouquet on this wine is almost tangible, and the experience is transportive (unfortunately it took #1 or #2 to the wrong place, but that's another story). Succulent stewed berry and plums, dark chocolate and licorice, with funky notes of mushroom, garrigue, and dried herbs. The ripe fruit explodes on the tongue, and the funk gives way to pleasant complementary earthy and herbal tones on the mid-palate. The finish is long and leaves me wanting more. Benefited from 2-3 hour decant, and still strong on day one and two after opening. Another few years left I would think, but why wait? - drink.

  • 2003 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain

Randy Dunn is my hero - in a perfect world I would own a heck of a lot more of his product, but for now I will just savor these special moments with his special wines. This one was shared with #1 or #2 in a blind (to him) tasting next to '03s from Solaia and Calon Segur. All were wonderful, but the Dunn was the show-stopper. Heavy wax seal required some chiseling to remove; deep purple color without any bricking; heavy sediment. The nose is inviting with cassis, blackberry, barn floor, and floral notes in perfect harmony. The tannins are well integrated, very pleasant. Phenomenal at 2 hours decant, even more so at 4 hours, and still going strong on day one and two later. In a great place right now but probably another 10 good years left - drink or hold (though why would you?). Masterful winemaking - thanks again, Randy!
