France Trip: Paris, Champagne, Burgundy; 9/3/2023-9/17/2023 (Paris, Champagne, Burgundy): Light medium gold plus color. Split bottle between the four of us at La Lune in Beaune. Dried apricot, plum, baked apple, mushroom, earth and chalk on the nose. The palate is rather oxidative, tart green apple, honeycomb, mushroom, dried apricot, chalky. 91+pts.

70% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir. Brut Nature. Golden, fine bead; aromatic, biscuit/bready, lemon curd more than lemon peel, brioche; palate is medium bodied, high acidity, slightly sharp but well balanced, lemon peel, lemon curd, tart citrus throughout, lovely mousse, a bit of grapefruit in the midpalate; finish is medium-plus length, clean, lemony. Very nice champagne of good quality, fresh but showing some traces of maturity. 91

First time tasting these late released gems from Tarlant, this one is 70% chardonnay and 30% pinot noir fermented in barrel. Malolactic was "not provoked", whatever that means. Disgorged March 26, 2018 -- 12 years on the lees -- and no dosage added. This shows a golden hue suggesting its age, but I found the nose and palate rather youthful, with only moderately developed richness. It reminds me very much of the multivintage Cuvee Louis, but with less intensely oxidative caramel/butterscotch than I've found in recent releases of that wine. Still very high pressure. I liked this very much and find the contrast between 2004 freshness and acidity and the slightly exotic character of the fruit quite attractive. It's surprisingly unevolved on day 2. I suspect this could be a 30 year wine, at least, and wish I had a lot of it.

Second bottle a year later, perhaps a small step up from last year, with a little Brioche and more expressive palate. V. Good.

As advertised. Potent dry well balanced. Good acid not too much.
