  • I was not expecting to like this so much more than the Kabinett (#8), but huh. This is something. All the bright citrus/pear fruit of the Kabinett, but conveyed with a bit more restraint and slightly less sweetness, but there’s also such a vivid mineral component here. Intensely stony and rocky, and the mineral notes keep building as this sits open longer. It’s just barely off-dry with enough sugar to round out the acids, but never really feeling ‘sweet’. Terrific wine and I need to find more.

  • 2021 to Kupp, unplanned; 4/5/2024-4/8/2024 (Detroit): 9.5% abv Grosse Lage. AP 9. 55° F to start.
NOSE: immediately after an otherwise similar Stirn (AP 15) this tells a distinct red-shift in aroma. Lemon and peppermint-poof join green citrus and spearmint; timbered alley on a wharf; sensations of direct sun, photo-phenolic green/yellow/rose/russet preserved in fleur de sel. MOUTH: one weight-class heavier than Stirn (Welter?); slightly more density. Turbulent sweetness nourishes herbal and bitter fresh root crunch (radish, peach.) Replete acidity muscles the action, guaranteeing aerated freshness and unavoidable drinkability.

  • This needs about an hour in a decanter to really express itself. It really shines once the reduction and sponti has blown off and it's cooled down below cellar temp. There's just so much cream and stonefruit. The fruit feels like a riper Kabi or Spät but the acid and sugar are firmly on the drier side of Kabinett. It's Lauer, so of course it's delicious.

Love Florian’s off-dry wines, and this may be my favorite young Kern that I can recall. Subtle aromas of Meyer lemon, lemon blossom, white peach, and a little rubber on the nose. Nuanced flavors of white peach, green apple, and whipped cream on the palate, and a hint of slate minerals on the finish. Though mouth-coating, with a creamy body and good dry extract, the wine’s light spritz and focused, yet explosive acidity provide a nice balance that makes one want to come back for sip after sip. Such a gorgeous wine, can’t wait to see how this develops with age.

  • Very nice Kabi style off-dry Riesling. Minerals, some yeast, salt lemon and other citrus including orange. Somewhat reductive, nose is not that expressive for a Riesling. Sweetness and acidity are perfectly balanced, super refreshing.
