Double-decanted for 4 hours. The wine had an atmospheric smell, atypical and difficult to describe as others have noted. At times, though, it smelled of fresh buttery olives; cedar also. Fresh-tasting but also a sweet warmth, overripe strawberries and licorice. I was particularly impressed by the finely-woven texture.

Lots of stems here, lending great spice. Wild strawberry and bright black cherry. As good, if not better, after three hours of air time with good funk emerging.

With Jim, Mannie, Rob, Bill and friends at Charlie Bird. Part of a flight of 9 1989s. Wild strawberries dominate this wine. It was the most mature and of the flight and showed very well in this incredible company

Great showing. First glass has some wild earthy scents, with a structure that's still gritty and chewy. Then it smooths out and gets almost silky by the time we get to drinking it - and starts throwing off those enticing tapenade scents that are just textbook for this wine.

1989 Barolo (NoMad Restaurant, NYC): [Double-decanted mid-afternoon. Tasted about 10pm.] Exotically perfumed nose. Fragrant and exotic in the mouth. Elegant. Hard to describe. Not quite like most Barolos, but it has a classic sweetness and elegant fruit. It's the perfume that is so different.
