Madeira Pilgrimage; 2/1/2016-2/4/2016 (Madeira): Whoa, this is an extreme wine. Smells like candle wax, honey, dried hay, chamomile tea and cigar smoke. Bright and tangy with some significant volatile acidity showing, but the other flavors peek through and expose notes of ginger, grapefruit rind, sea brine and crushed shells. Amazing to taste a Sercial this old, as I love the flavors of Sercial in all its iterations. This is one of the weirdest and interesting examples.

Roy Hersh's Majestic Madeira Extravaganza (Seattle, WA): Slightly cloudy. A piquant nose with pickled capers and some VA. Wow, this is getting much more expressive and floral. Mmm, salt and limes, very dry. Lots of acid on the mouthwatering finish with lime and citrus dominating. This is very refreshing and intense, a true "laser" of a wine. There is a slightly bitter note of peanut skin on the finish. Of the two Sercials, this was my preferred wine, as I found it to be more consistent and harmonious.

(D'Oliveiras Madeira Sercial Reserva) Medium dark amber brown color with golden lights and clear meniscus; buttery, light rum butter, VA, almond nose; rich, toasty, light caramel, nuts, very tart apricot, roast coffee palate with lemon acidity; long finish
(D'Oliveiras Madeira Sercial Reserva) Dark orange color, and a bit cloudy; soft, sweet orange and light caramel nose; lovely dry, super tart entry with a notion of tart orange, lime, tea and chalk on the very focused palate, with earthy edges (Peter described them as "ashy"); long finish 93+ pts.

Consistent with Sercial style of Madeira. As long of a finish as I ever recall in a Sercial. Decanted for four days before drinking; amazing nose.
