Very classic mid+ weight Chianti. Needs time to open. Once it does it reminds me of several bottles I’ve had in random Tuscan restaurants. Which is to say not super distinctive but authentic and quality.

Pnp. Very enticing nose of black cherry, pomegranate, lilacs, roses, sweet balsamic. Rather fruit forward but in an old world kind of way. The palate was medium bodied with chalky tannins and medium acid. Somewhat improved from the last time I had this wine, with very interesting aromatics and a lifted and elegant palate. To me just entering its drinking window. I had the 2019 recently which disappointed me but drinking this now just makes me think this bottling needs time. 90-91 pts drink now-2030.
Pop and pour. Better integrated and smoother than the last bottle I had in September ‘22. Drinking nicely now, but still has 3-5 years of life ahead. I will hold my last bottle until at least 2026 to see what happens.

2017 Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva ($27 in 2021). Mid ruby, brick edges, viscous (14.0 alc.); red fruit, floral, wood, light spice nose; mid+acids; mid tannins; softens with air; semi-long, tight red fruit finish. 16/90.
