  • Gorgeous nose. Mature dark fruit, sous bois, white pepper. Not sure if it was my wine glass from all the prior pours of the evening, but it finished a bit hot for me, which threw me off. But for the aromatics and pedigree of the vintage, this was a wonderful wine to experience.

  • Solo bottles are the hardest. I bought this on release ages ago, and it then just sat in the cellar…waiting…waiting. Finally tonight I decided enough was enough and popped the cork. It was mostly worth the wait.

I did not expect magic, and did not get it, but I did get a solid 1er Cru Burgundy, with earthy, loamy notes and a surprisingly solid core of fruit that even had a bit of cherry cola to it. Not much in the way of tannin left, but good acids to provide structure, and the umami elements happily dominated the finish.

Worth waiting over 20 years? I suppose so, especially if setting realistic expectations for the wine.

  • Nice wine. A bit surly and structured out of the gate, but with a couple hours in the decanter this softens into a deep, reasonably complex burg with intense, spicy Pinot fruit. The fruit is quite dense and crunchy, showing the old vines character. This is on the darker and more brooding end of the spectrum, with substantial structure, and I suspect it won't hit its apex until at least a decade from now.

  • This comes from ancient vines and is a pet favorite wine of mine. It’s still so young but quite tasty. Takes a couple hours in the decanter to show much of anything. But as it unfurls the nose is really very lovely and the palate is bright and mineral but on the lean side. It slowly deepens with air. Four hours in, the last sip was the best.

  • '99 is still so tight, not sure if it will ever open up but I will keep trying every six months. All things considered this was good but not great, more due to the vintage than the producer I would say.

Rockss and Fruit

(Bruno Clair Savigny-Les-Beaune "La Dominode") From some of the oldest vines in Savigny this wine is profound and is easily the best Savigny I have had. I would LOVE to taste the '05 of this because due to the character of the vintage I think it would be better than the '99. Dark aromas of pine, resin, black cherries and forest floor. Brooding nose. The palate was incredibly concentrated and had loads of black/blue fruits and foresty, mineral flavors. The purity of the fruit was quite striking. The finish was long and the wine was still tannic but not undrinkable. This has 10-15 years on it.

(Bruno Clair Savigny-Les-Beaune "La Dominode") Delicate yet very concentrated with dark black fruits and really potent spice and dark fruit on the nose. Beautifully etched tannins and perfect acids. One of the best Burgs I have had this year.
