Pop and pour, followed over almost 3 hours. Upon initial opening, a nose of brett blanketed over what seemed like good, mature cab notes. The palate was initially a bit thin and the fruit buried under the mar of brett funk. Frustrating initially and swirling vigorously in hopes the funk would blow off. Only a small amount did and I had almost given up on it. Finally at about the 2 hour mark, the funk blew off to reveal mature cab notes of dusty cherries, currants, earth, and old leather-bound book character. Good acidity and fine, lightly drying tannins. Good long finish with sour cherries, leather and earth. Could use just a little more concentration to the fruit, but still good.
In terms of score, began at 89. Ended around a 93. If only the brett notes had blown off a little sooner, this wine would have been that much more spectacular. Such is the frustration with old wine!

This is my third bottle in the past year, but the first time I've bothered to write a note, so clearly this has not made a strong impression. Based on memory, this bottle is similar to the previous two, and is a bit tired. This lacks the vigor of a wine 13 years its senior ('77 Clos du Val) that I had last week, and despite its youthful color, it is well into tertiary development. Better on the nose than palate, this has smokey and cedary aromas, with kirsch, tobacco and leaf litter flavors on a medium-bodied frame with a dry tannic finish. Improved and filled out a bit with some air, so we'll revisit tomorrow.

Clear purple with some garnet on edges. Notes of cassis and vanilla on nose and palate. Dry, nice acidity, med body, smooth tannins. Surprisingly alive for 29 years.

The last bottle out of a case purchased about 25 years ago, when this wine was rated 98-100 in a subscription newsletter. When purchased, even the wine merchant selling it knew little of CVV, and at that time it cost $20/btl. Upon purchase, and for some years, this wine was a stunner, and arguably worth that stellar rating. It's now past it's prime and lost it's fruit, with remaining tastes of tar, tobacco, earth, sage, light truffle, and leather. Just an echo of a once-great wine.
