(Le Macchiole Bolgheri ROSSO) Le Macchiole #2 Dear Friends, It appears this wine has actually lived up to the pomp and circumstance. The first time we offered the 2008 Le Macchiole Rosso, it received the largest response of 2010 and it hasn’t really been challenged since – the 2nd place wine is far behind. The original offer earlier in the summer almost put Niki out of commission (can you say “exhaustion”?) and it took days to sort through the order rubble. Why? The price was close to impossible and the wine itself is outstanding - a Bolgheri standout that will pummel most in its path (in a dignified European way of course). That parcel arrived a few weeks ago and the re-order requests have continued to go up (after many of the corks have been pulled – which is the best sign of all). So... For the past two months, I’ve been trying to pry more of the 2008 Rosso away from Le Macchiole and, as of this morning, I finally have a second parcel. Yes, it’s on 2nd tranche but who cares? It’s still at a ridiculous tariff that should encourage “house wine” stocking stuffers and just plain stocking up for any and every occasion. A crazy deal on one of the year’s star over-achievers. (for background “enthusiasm” and Wine Advocate/Antonio Galloni review, please see original offer below) This parcel is directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance. FIRST COME FIRST SERVED up to 72/person until we run out: 2008 Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso - (compare at $30-35+) To order: niki@garagistewine.com This wine is set to depart from Bolgheri – it will arrive in late October (please check OARS for local pick up after October 25th). It will ship during the Fall shipping season. Out of state orders will be held for free under ideal storage conditions (56 degrees/70%humidity) until shipping is possible. Locals may pick up at their leisure. For current local pick up and arrival/ship information, please see your OARS link below (at the bottom of this offer) - don’t know how to access your OARS? I was going to save this for the Christmas holiday season but the Antonio Galloni review last week has made that impossible. I have to “take it or leave it” today and I know the vast majority of you will want to take this is in a very large way. If you’ve been considering an addition or adding an extra bedroom to your home, you may want to build it out of empty cases of this. 2008 is turning into a formidable successor to 2006 in Bolgheri and the wines have a special quality that is not dissimilar from 2009 Left Bank Bordeaux (other areas of Tuscany were not as lucky with dilute, average wines). Full in flavor, layered and tannic (with only moderate alcohol) and natural acidity to match, many of the 2008 wines of Bolgheri are going to receive acclaim that is through the roof. As far as Le Macchiole is concerned, I’ve already consumed my two sample bottles of this wine (hand toted back from Bolgheri) and I'm not sure what to say? It gets better and better as oxygen is gobbled and the hours tick away and it makes the 2007 version of the Rosso seem like an afterthought. After three days open, the wine continues to evolve but I doubt any of you will have the patience to wait that long once a bottle is opened. In contrast to the 2007 Rosso, the 2008 is a very serious wine with an amazing amalgam of styles in a single bottle: Bordeaux, Bolgheri, Calistoga, Central Tuscany – it’s all here and somehow it works. In fact, it more than “works”, it screams like only the Cabernet-based wines of this small slice of coastal Tuscany can. I am certainly not alone in my semi-amazement at the quality level of this wine - Antonio Galloni is not one to give verbiage like this to a merely good example. From a mix of Cabernet, Merlot, Sangiovese and Syrah, look out world, Le Macchiole has delivered one for the record books at this price-level, a wine that is unquestionably the very best example I have ever tasted from Bolgheri in the $XXXX range: As I said above, today’s offer vies for one of the best overall deals we’ve come across in a long time and I'm not spouting retailer garble – the price, provenance, winery, acclaim and versatility speak for themselves...no hype needed. Use it for a party, fine dining, weddings, graduation, holiday events – whatever (it works for all occasions regardless of how formal) - in the process, you will look like the king or queen of the collector circuit, especially when you politely let slip that you paid XXXX...or maybe you would prefer to keep that fact between us? I can certainly keep a secret. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as one of the more versatile Italian wines you will encounter regardless of palate presence (and it has years to go before losing steam). If you are a fan of Calistoga’s more classic examples like Araujo or Montelena do not hesitate to dive in as well – you may open your palate to something very enjoyable indeed (and it pairs more favorably with Italian cuisine). This parcel is directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance. We’re all going to have to chip-in and send Niki on a vacation after this but here goes... 2008 Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso – SOLD OUT (compare at $30-40 in the US) Click here to view the status of your orders in O.A.R.S.
