  • Youthful, garnet colour for its age. A wine that defied the vintage. Bright red fruit in the nose with raspberry and spices. Fresh and energetic. Hard to believe that this was from such a warm vintage. A success

  • I think this might be the only 2003 I didn't sell off. This doesn't really show any of the obvious detriments of the freak vintage, but it also doesn't show any of the plus-sides you'd want to get out of the vintage in terms of power, density, etc. - it is actually uncharacteristically light for a Gaudichots. The fruit has decent freshness given both the vintage and the bottle age, airy red berries boosted with some deeper plumminess on the back end and also a bit of sage- or mint-like leafiness. Aromatically there are some promising Vosne spice features at the outset but instead of getting more expressive with air they kind of burrow back in and disappear. Tannins are mostly resolved, actually about as smooth and streamlined a Gaudichots as I've ever had and very drinkable, but this is a vineyard where I want some intrigue, not just drinkability, and it's a question mark for me whether there is enough stuffing here for much else to come out in the coming years.

  • 2003 Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (Iggy's, Hilton Hotel, Singapore): A fabulous wine - this was much, much better than the tired 375ml that I had a couple of years back. It had an amazing nose, somewhat subtler, almost restrained compared to some of the obviously ripe 2003 character on some of the other wines, with very focused and alluring aromas of dark cherries and blackberries along with perfumed notes of violets, earthy soil, and lifted accents of bramble and spices. Lovely. The palate was very un-2003, showing a lovely bright clarity to its dark cherry flavours. Higher-toned than most of the other wine on show, this was a wine of finesse, marrying elegance with intensity, with fine tannins giving it a nice chew to it on the midpalate and through into an earthy finish. Markedly better than the two Vosne Grand Cru on the same flight, this was a lovely, characterful wine that showed beautifully on the night.

  • Drinks at Mood Indigo (Mood Indigo, Jalan Kilang Barat, Singapore): From a 375ml opened a couple of days ago, this may not be representative of a fresh bottle, but I thought it was pretty nice. It had a deep Vosne nose, not exactly a DRC La Tache, but with nice deep wafts of earth and meat, spice and soy, and then a rich trail of dark fruit aromas trailing behind. There was a very nice savoury character to it all. The palate was not exactly bright, but it had a surprisingly good amount of juicy acidity for a 2003 wine to go along with its ripe mouthful of dark cherries and plums, all seasoned with a dash of wood spice - cloves and maybe anise I thought. There was a nice clarity to the wine as well as a good grip of firm but fine tannins that carried it into a strong, spice-infused finish. A nice drop, with quite a bit of character to it; this probably has some room to grow as well. I would like to try a fresh bottle maybe 3-4 years down the road.

  • Opened and consumed over the course of about 3 hours. Nice mix of clove and spice on the nose with a touch of earth. Shows a tiny bit of extra-ripe fruit on the palate but there are a lot of secondary characteristics coming through as well including some nice spice elements. Balance is very nice and tannins are integrating nicely. I'll hold off on the other bottle for a few more years.
