Thinking about buying more to lay down in light of the 95 to 97 rating from Dunnuck but wanted to get an idea where it’s at first. As provided on their website, “this bottling has consisted of new sites we are trialing, declassified barrels from single vineyard wines and vineyards that fell out of contract along the way. It’s a diverse mix but the common thread is there has always been a minimum of 4 sub-AVAs represented in every edition.” Purple fruit - blackberry, currants, and dark cherry. Smooth mid-palate with decent depth/concentration. Rich flavors of cassis, some spice/herbs, cocoa, oak, and a little graphite component. Decent finish but not overly long nor deep - it could use more time to open-up with the finish which isn’t a surprise in light of its youth. Slow ox during the day for around ten hours and then drank out of a decanter for a couple more. Improved a little with time. Revisited on day two and it was better as it opened-up more. WA anticipated maturity 2024 to 2035 but I disagree - this wine needs another year or two to soften/open-up further. For me, closer to the 92 rating from WA and 93 from Galloni on day two.
JD gave this 95-97. It definitely has the potential to get there. While this appellation designate was intended to drink young to allow the single vineyard bottles to age a bit, I drank this extremely young. I planned to gift a bottle and I was curious to see if it would be suitable. Simply speaking, this is not ready. I sipped on this over 3 days and it did start to open up on day 2 and the tannins softened a little bit. Still, it was still not that well integrated on day 3. Bouquet has all of the hallmark Cabernet Sauvignon notes. It's plush and mouth coating. Finish is still a bit alcoholic. Nevertheless, it's 93+ for me, a nobody.
So let's real about a really well made wine that does rise to a 94 + score on CT. I get a delicious and balanced wine but also me that has weaker fruit mainly of blueberry versus other 94 + wines.
Aromatically I get blackberry, sulpher, and some barrel wood. In mouth the wine is immediate acidic driven sharpness which does calm down in a few seconds to reveal blueberry driven fruit notes. Finish is rich and very well balanced. I suspect this wine will improve over the next few years. I can see this wine rising in score to maybe 92 but improvement is needed. The goods are there for that.
