Root Day - Decanted off a couple of tablespoons of fine sediment. Cork is sound and the wine has only penetrated about 1/2 way up one side. Still has a garnet core with only a little browning at the rim. Nose is quite herbal with red flowers, red fruit, licorice and just a bit of smoke. On the palate it’s spicy with red fruit, licorice, dark chocolate and herbs. There’s still a good amount of tannin left but it’s mostly resolved and the acid balance is excellent. The finish is long with the red fruit continuing along with a spicy element (almost a chili pepper spice). This is very youthful and drinking extremely well. Impressive!

Weekly tasting group RWP #261: Leftovers (@ DJ): In the bouquet sweet ripe fruits, tobacco, coffee and caramel. On the palate juicy and ripe fruits, eucalyptus, good acidity and also a firm amount of sweetness. Great length. The wine is fully mature now.

2 hour decant. 14.5%. Só Syrah. This is so very very different from the 2011 - perhaps obviously - that's a big, full-on wine, which this really isn't. Some hints of brick - delightful and seductive nose around dark cherries - quite restrained in the mouth - subtle, again around dark cherries and some damsons, but somewhat faded - there's a hint of chemical in the background that detracts slightly - not especially long. Nice wine, but, for the same price, I'd much rather have the 2011.

Decanted for one hour. A lot of deposit. The wine liked the aeration and it is perfect right now. The tertiary aromas are being beautifully and increasingly dominant without losing the balance. Great powerfull glass now. Drink up, but not in a hurry.
