Jason & Simon's Village Burgundy Tasting Dinner (67 Pall Mall): I think I enjoyed this a little more than my tablemates, some stone fruit there, a certain gentle roundness, definitely one I would have liked to engage with over a leisurely dinner though, not sure it was flattered by the speed-dating format.

Village Burgundy from Good Producers (67 Pall M): Dark fruited and meaty on pouring with some aniseed in the mix. Palate is tannic and ungiving. Hints of sous bois but this is not much fun right now.

Jason's Village Burgundies II (67 Pall Mall): Medium red, limpid, some fine suspension. Firm wine, easier and more ready than the '05 alongside, but nonetheless severe. Red fruit is in there somewhere, but I find pepper and olive tones to be the ones that leap out. There is a certain gloss perhaps, but it's weighty and doesn't scream Pinot Noir to me, and certainly doesn't bring me to Volnay. Interesting wine, but not what I am looking for.

Village Burgundy: Mid ruby. Just starting to hint at garnet. Similar familial nose to the 05 but with more red fruit and lift. A slightly meaty edge to the developing sous bois with some redcurrant and cherry. A nod to redder fruit, definition and more line here. Peony on the nose with air. Rustic would be harsh, but not a suave and sophisticated number, maybe lacking a little generosity of spirit. ***

Takes every bit of 2-3 hours to unwind and develop red cherry and florals. Terrific village level wine, but needs 3-5 years.
