This is a big departure from the wonderful 2007. Unusual, atypical Amador Zin fruit of licorice and generic smoky dark fruit. Strangely, I woke in the middle of the night thinking smoke taint. The fruit has very slight, almost sour smokiness which doesn't fit and may (or may not?) be the reason for the odd fruit expression. It's light/medium in the mouth, very lively and bright, reasonably together but not quite as poised as the 2007. Overall, disappointing because of my experience with the 2007 but objectively an average/good wine although not a pure Zin benchmark.

It is hard to believe this is a Zinfandel. The flavors, aromas, and structure are more like a Cabernet or a Syrah. The dominant feeling in the mouth is acid, which as us zin lovers know, is quite uncharacteristic. Yes there is plenty of refined blackberry and dark cherry fruit, but unusual for a zin, it is subordinate to the acid, and indeed the tannin. Blame the Amador county terroir. Still, for what is in the glass, this is a value, and stylishly unique. Not at all idiciitive of a Zinfandel, but a very respectable wine.

Nice ripe fruit tending towards the jammy side with an interesting spice element at the end. Smooth, medium length finish, with lingering oak.

Tasted at NYC Winter Wine Fest 2012 at Best Buy Theater in Times Square. Mixed red berries, clove & cinammon. Simple & straight-forward Zin.
