Community Tasting Notes (average 89.9 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 41 notes)

Tasted by il_diavolo on 2/6/2010 & rated 88 points: just an ordinary cab, nothing special - was surprised to see what it was (131 views)
Tasted by TinMan on 1/17/2010 & rated 94 points: One of my bottles which has cellared well. The expected deep Cabernet red color...unbelievable legs! An initial bright red fruit nose. This is an outstanding wine even if it's not one of the renowned Opus One vintages. I wouldn't judge this wine to be "finished". Enjoyed with a mid-spicy chili dish and jalapeno cornbread. Wow! (532 views)
Tasted by ronscottf on 1/17/2010 & rated 87 points: It was ok, but not living up to the expectations that I had thought. Definitely at the end of it's drinking window. All in all, I'd rather have a great Bordeaux blend from Washington. (525 views)
Tasted by mraabpfg on 1/5/2010 & rated 95 points: Great bottle of cab, lots of soft fruit and just the right balance of tannins. Nice wood a well (623 views)
Tasted by Alan Partridge on 1/5/2010 & rated 79 points: I had such expectations for this wine. California's finest??? The great and the good of the sunshine state? What the HD! If I pissed blood from a catheter it would taste better than this sorry excuse for a wine. I could have crashed headlong thorugh the vineyard dragging a rabid cat and expected a better outcome. Do you realise that I split up from my wife? dO YOU?? aND i CHOSE THIS WINE TO CELEBRATE THE EVENT. And what did i get??? A sorry whiny, nagging excuse of a wine. JUST LIKE MY WIFE!!! Tasting like a slag heap, sour, bat-faced harridan. She got the 1959 Latour and I got you!! Is this what the alimony is going to be like??? I HATE YOU!!! YOU RUINED MY LIFE!!!! (1057 views)
Tasted by jforro on 1/2/2010 & rated 88 points: Very overated wine, not worth the price. (620 views)
Tasted by markjahnke on 10/24/2009 & rated 94 points: I know that there are many non-believers out there who claim to hate Opus one, and I attribute a lot of this to the inflated price. I was lucky enough to pick up a few bottles of this wine a few years ago for around $70, and I have to say that for the money, this was one hell of a great wine! I grabbed this from the cellar where we hide all of our “gems,” as a pre-anniversary celebration bottle, since our anniversary falls during the week this year. This had about 45 minutes to warm up on the way to Fiddleheads in Jamesburg, NJ, and was popped and poured. Gorgeous deep garnet classic cabernet color in the glass, thinning towards the rim made this wine still look very youthful. As a lot of you know, 2000 is not known to be a stellar vintage for the Napa Valley, but this wine showed to prove this wrong, as have some of the other big hitters from this vintage. On the nose, this reminded me of a nice Bordeaux with some cassis, tobacco, cigar box, tar, earth, blueberry, and cherry, with the smallest hint of band aid / brett. On the palate, all kinds of red cherry, blackberry, pomegranate, and raspberry jam. Off vintage my foot, this wine has a great fruity, jammy, and velvety structure, with a bit of oak on the medium finish. All in all, this was a pleasure to drink, and I couldn’t think of a better wine that I expected so little from to date. This was darn good, and I wish I would have bought more at this price. Thankfully we still have one left that we’ll revisit 5 years down the road. For now, feel free to pop one of these, as I believe it is drinking in a beautiful place. After drinking an ’02 Insignia just a few weeks ago, I think that this wine would give it a run for its money, and is 94 points worthy. Cheers! (1210 views)
Tasted by RPerro on 7/18/2009 & rated 92 points: Opened to celebrate Kristina's new job. Pop and pour. This wine smells like a Bordeaux...just amazing nose of big black fruit and earthy tobacco. For an off year, this is really drinking nicely! So smooth and such elegant structure...blackberry fruit, tobacco, with a touch of dusty tannins. Somewhat raisiny, with a bitterish finish.  Tasted by steveabb on 6/9/2009 & rated 86 points: Very good, but not great. Agree with many of the reviews here suggesting that it is overpriced and surprisingly devoid of character. Have certainly tasted many a $50 Napa Valley Cabernet that I preferred over this one (which is a shame given the price tag). I can't honestly say that anything stood out to a large degree. The nose was enticing but not intoxicating and the finish was there but not remarkable. This would have been a great $30 wine... not so good at $100+ though. :-( (1878 views)
Tasted by Bobo N on 5/1/2009 & rated 93 points: Special Thanks to robertdtwo for the Opus vertical tasting. This 2000 was a pleasant surprise. The black cherry and ripe blackberry with layers of leather and mineral had me asking repeatedly if this was really the 2000. An excellent bottle of wine and I preferred it to the 2002. You can drink now or hold. (2242 views)
Tasted by robertdtwo on 4/26/2009 & rated 93 points: Bottle #2 of a 97-00-02 Opus Vertical; 2.75 hour decant... beautiful ruby color, cherry nose, dark fruit on the palate and very 'jammy.' A wonderful surprise given my expectations of this vintage - this was absolutely wonderful! (2214 views)
Tasted by swyang on 4/11/2009 & rated 93 points: Medium body beauty, very well balanced between, fruits, soft tannins, and just a hint of wood/raisiny character ready to be enjoyed. On the nose majority would have guessed a beautiful Bordeaux, Pauillac I would have said. Nice, complex, refined, and reverberating. Simply a great joy to drink this with Lamb Chops, and wish I could have more. Just like the other day, tried a Pichon Baron '02, which is supposed be an off year, but showed beautifully, this one was sure a very, very sensitive, suave, medium body wine, which went superbly with food. Just like what I like. (2326 views)
Tasted by Florida on 3/29/2009 & rated 90 points: In most respects this was a very good wine. A little thin. Very delicate. Long complex finish, but, overall, I expected more. (2403 views)

Tasted by NavyGrog on 9/28/2008 & rated 89 points: Smooth and very fragrant, though a bit superficial. Drank first half of bottle Saturday evening after decanting it about an hour. Corked and drank the rest the following afternoon. Wine was about the same, a little flatter. (2883 views)
Tasted by cabrnay on 9/7/2008 & rated 87 points: Opus has to be one of the most over rated wines known to man. The 97 was flawless until it fell off the cliff in 2006-2007, now it's just salad dressing. This 2000 was one of those classic bad years for Opus, very mundane, no real character. You can tell it's not your run of the mill wines, but it's no where near the wine it's name says it should be. (2889 views)
Tasted by spts1000 on 9/5/2008 & rated 85 points: nose right out of the bottle was bursting with dark fruit. there was NO sediment in the bottle which i found a little weird. wine had fruit but was flat. one dimentional. disapointing, but it was an off year. i would suggst it is time to drink (2812 views)
Tasted by davidrh1 on 8/17/2008 & rated 84 points: What a terrible dusty, leathery mess of barnyard smells and flavors. I suppose there is some cherry and coco in there somewhere, under the dead leaves, but for $150 this was a total waste. For $15 I would pour it out, but we felt obligated to drink most of it because of the price. Bleah! (2932 views)
Tasted by msinger on 5/31/2008 & rated 90 points: Had this bottle to toast the passing of Robert Mondavi (only bottle of his we had). Decanted for 3 hours. The nose was very floral. clearl BDX blend, lean but elegant. Red berries, hint of chocolate. Thanks RM for your love of wine and your influence on me in enjoying this past time. 90-91 pts. (3374 views)
Tasted by Coleman on 5/25/2008 & rated 92 points: Unbelievable nose. At the tail end of a Memorial Day weekend when we drank some unbelievable wines-- Staglin 2003 Cab, 2001 Pride Merlot, Togni Cab 2000. This was quite stunning. Not decanted. The bouquet just bursts from the glass, with dark fruits and eucalyptus. The palate starts strong, and lasts long. Initially I thought the mid-palate was a little empty, but after sitting in the glass for a little bit there is a great subtle complexity. Plentiful but easy and gentle tannins. A really great wine, especially considering the vintage. (3423 views)
Tasted by TinMan on 5/16/2008 & rated 93 points: Bordeaux-like and has developed a complexity I didn't perceive in my past tastings. This is a fine wine. Still has some time left... (3454 views)
Tasted by MarcoAzevedo on 2/23/2008 & rated 95 points: Really outstanding! On of the most, maybe the most, fragrant wine I've ever tasted. While it was poured on the decanter (where it waited for almost an hour) I could feel its eucalyptus smell from half a meter away. It was the perfect moment to drink it: smooth but still firm and structured, full bodied and very concentrated. Tanic at the exact point. In the palate notes of oak, fig, eucalyptus, coffee and herbs. Marvelous! (3893 views)

From winery website: Opus One
Vintage Notes
Despite an early budbreak, vintage 2000 saw a long, cool growing season, with a harvest extending into late October. The 2000 Opus One was given 44 days of skin contact, and spent 19 months in 100% new French oak barrels.
Varietals
87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot.
Tasting Notes
Soft and plush in texture, the 2000 Opus One offers aromas of sandalwood, leather, caramel, and a hint of anise. Showing flavors of blackberry and herbs, the wine is harmonious with sweet tannins and a long, intense finish.

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in almost 10 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
