This wine still had structure and balance but was 3 to 5 years past peak and was on the downside. It was lacking fruit, but that is not unexpected for a 34 year old bottle. Nicely integrated wine and the tannins were tame. The wine lacked the intensity one would expect and that is the result of age. We tasted this as part of a California Wine evening with a 2006 Kapcsandy Family Cab Sauv, 2014 Duckhorn Three Palms Merlot and a 2010 Dominus. It was just a little too old to stand up to the other wines and showed its age.

Dark garnet with no rusty edges. Intense leather & oak nose. Well balanced, Medium bodied with long finish. Tastes of blackberry and Danson Plum. Fruit comes out after open a bit. Has lost little or nothing over the 30+ years. It improved all around after decanting and open 1+ hours. Later the tannins and fruit both develop. Thought this old California wine might have died.

Napa Tasting (Bistro Cocotte, Haberfield): Initially medium minus intensity aromas of blackcurrant, a little cedar, leather, slightly oxidised notes, a little earthy farmyard and plasticine, cassis. Opens with time to show more fruit no the nose but still 'contained'. Juicy acidity, blackcurrant, cassis, a touch of red currant, talc textured tannins dry the mid palate and gums but support the fruit. travels long with non-intrusive alcohol on the finish. Nice.

Mom’s 60th birthday (French Laundry): Moderate aromatics, slight spice, blackberry; palate is full bodied, medium-plus alcohol, moderate tannins well integrated, mature fruit; medium-plus finish. Served with a ‘99 Pavie and these are actually very qualitatively similar. 92
