Can’t have a tasting of “aromatic whites” without closing with a red or two! I loved Girardin’s ‘03s right out of the gate with their extraordinary depth and richness in this hot and controversial vintage. Enough so that I bought several cases encompassing eight different reds. Jadot also did great this vintage. Anyhow, this shows violets and peony, beetroot, gorgeous dark cherry fruit with hints of clove. Simply decadent and delicious.
Lots of funk on the nose initially. Blew off after an hour or so. In generally, elegantly balanced. Structure was quite faded - minimal tannins, medium acid. A bit one-dimensional, but not disappointing

More elegant, floral and spicy than the '03 Girardin Charmes-Chambertin, though about as complex with smoked wood, wild, brambly red and blue fruits remaining, still. Leather, fennel, Asian spice. Opens up to more soupy, beef broth/umami richness. I do get more toast/marsh mellow on this bottle with oak spice. Great sweetness and "gutsy" fruit. Power but with Grand Cru expression/layering. 94.

This has come a long way since my note of nearly 5 years ago! Deeply colored; rich dark fruit with smoke, campfire, leather and toasty oak, incense; this is just into secondary character, soil-driven, Asian spices; loads of umami on the finish. Impractical for an old guy like me to buy young burgs but if you can find a nearly 20 yr old wine this good for ~$100, you won’t be disappointed!!!

(Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Echezeaux) Medium cherry red color; tight, oaky tart cherry nose; vanillin oak outweighing the sappy cherry fruit, with iron, lime and rosehips on palate, needs some years; medium-plus finish 90+ pts.

Burgundy Paulée with the Chevaliers du Tastevin (Chez Mike, East Greenbush, NY): Rich, mature cherry nose. Lovely and complex in the mouth, but a bit of a green streak is a bit off-putting. Still quite drinkable.
