Ok ... haven't really heard much good about the 96's opening up but what the hell, I tried one. Really shut down upon opening and took a good 2 hours to shake off the rust and when it did, BOOM Loved it Vanatou isnt the most traditional estate, but I have had a considerable number of Barbaresco from 97,98,99 vintages. Classic showing and very aromatic after it has opened up. The acidity is quite nice and the tannins are fine Like this and if you want points=93+

Where do I begin with the ‘96 Vanotu? First, the color, which was still a gorgeous deep ruby, with the beginnings of bricking on the rim. The bouquet seemed to bloom more and more as it spent time in the glass. Dark black cherry gave way to crushed roses, dusty soil tones, undergrowth, and minerals. On the palate, a silky textural wave of dark cherry fruit slashed against the senses, laced with mineral and inner floral tones. Its tannin was still present, yet perfectly interwoven through a core of pure red fruit. The finish lingered long with a coating of fine tannin and dried cherry. This beauty still has time to go before its ideal drinking window, but checking in on it today was quite a pleasure.

Dried figs and leather predominate. Good wine, but not for the money.
