  • Maybe on the downslope. Very monotone, just dark stewed fruit without the acid necessary to balance it.

  • Macerated for 3-4 weeks with the skins in 10,000-liter French oak vats. Half of the wine is aged in barriques (15% new), half in large botti casks. Aged for 24 months in oak, bottled and aged for another year in bottles. 15% alcohol.

Extracted, fully opaque black cherry color. Dry and somewhat restrained nose with aromas of licorice, ripe dark forest fruits, some plummy tones, a little bit of exotic spices and light boysenberry tones. The wine is dense, ripe and full-bodied with complex, savory flavors of wizened plums and some dried red cherries, a little bit of licorice root, light gamey umami tones, a sweeter hint of plummy dark fruit and a touch of earthy spice. The wine is medium-to-moderately high in acidity with ample yet very ripe and resolved tannins that contribute more to the texture than to the structure, slowly piling up on the gums. The finish is firm, moderately grippy and quite powerful with long, somewhat umami-driven flavors of roasted game, licorice root, some wizened black cherries, a little bit of pruney fruit, light earthy tones, a sweeter hint of blackberry marmalade and a touch of peppery spice. The high alcohol lends a slightly warm note to the aftertaste.

A wonderfully resolved, pure and classically built Sagrantino that is certainly big and powerful, yet not too aggressive or overdone at any point. I'm not sure if the wine has shown any obvious oak characteristics when it was younger, but at least now the wine tasted very harmonious with emphasis on the savory and somewhat developed Sagrantino fruit. It feels like the wine has reached its drinkability window, meaning that it is now quite accessible, but most likely the wine will still continue to develop for at least a decade more. Great stuff. Drink or keep. Outstanding value at 16€.

  • Excellent even fruit. Low acid and low tannins. Very easy to drink, but did not produce strong memories. Went well with food.

  • My first Sagrantino, and I'm in love! Big and brooding, this wine can be summed up as amazingly complex, red fruit, and chewy even at 9 years old. Nose is powerful with sweet spices, floral notes, cherries, plum, berries, leather, cigar box, and a bit of leafiness. Palate is big with tannins and texture that never seem to end. Black licorice, bacon fat, tar, cigarette ash, tahini, dark chocolate, and fresh espresso round this out. Exceedingly long and spicy finish. Wow.

  • Decanted an hour and it needs it. Full of rich fruit and a touch of acidity. Not for the faint of heart.
