  • Tried over five nights, this seemed flabby at first, with distinct over-honeyed notes, The finish was nutty and dry, and the mid-palate thin, so I was not impressed. Eventually this seemed to come together and improve, and lost some of the honey and thinness, but it never became anything close to outstanding. Maybe I drank it 20 years too young, but I doubt it. Showing the vintage's weakness and the challenge for any winemaker that year. Not a fan of this vintage, although I love the producer, the varietal, and this bottling usually.

  • Second slightly disappointing Knoll Smaragd wine, the other a Riesling from the same year. Either a bit to hot storage, or a year with a bit less acid.
Nearly nothing on the nose to start with, and in the mouth a lot of dryish bitternes. Feels flat and no fruit or fresh fruitacid.

Two days in the fridge and something has happened. Feels a lot fresher, some common spices and flowerish on the nose and dried fruit without sweetnes in the mouth.

Overall very interesting, but have to taste more before buying Knoll again.

  • Opened at 2:30 and tasted along side teh Ried Krutles Loibner. This one by far the jumpier, more richly extracted and weight of the two. More brioche and quince but of course you should expect more from the top bottle.

After drinking on this for a couple of days the conculsion was the bottle was having yeast problems. I cannot speculate why this would be so but everyone who drank it suffered butterflies in the tummy. Not the most positive experience for an $80 Gruner.
