  • Expecting to find a decrepit old man on his last legs I found, instead, a courtly old gentleman, still relatively erect, enveloped in an air of leather and tobacco. Nowhere near cooked or corked. While tertiary notes predominated, there was still sufficient fruit and structure to provide a very enjoyable accompaniment to some deeply flavored braised beef. By far the oldest, most complex and best Valpolicella I’ve ever drunk.

  • Not decanted. Well stored bottle and still in good shape, this is nevertheless at the lighter end of the Dal Forno Valpolicellas (vs eg 96) - quite understated but still enjoyable. Mellow delicate cherry, fruitcake and smoke / tobacco made for an attractive profile - there was some VA but it lifted quite quickly. This is fully mature and was maybe better 5 years ago ***1/2+

  • OK, but showing its age. A little caramelized around the edges. Best maybe in 2000.
