(Not a) birthday dinner (Hinsdale, IL): Not quite as compelling as my previous bottle (or maybe it was just being overwhelmed by the number of crazy bottles on the table tonight). I liked the weight of this more than the 1993 alongside, which was certainly brilliant in its own right, but just not quite as intense and layered. More oiliness and fatness, the way old school white Burgundy ought to have, with mature yellow fruit on the nose and palate. Great cut and minerality to balance, but this is a wine of texture.

Superbly fresh with Grand Cru concentration of fruit and texturally complex with oiliness and crispness at once. Lovely honey and mineral complexity. Old school white Burgundy at its best.

Joyce Farms vs. Green Circle (Chicago, IL): Doesn't have too much reduction anymore. A fat, broad, old-school chardonnay with tons of aromatic intensity and power. More textural than anything, I really found the oiliness/waxiness here really appealing, and though the acidity is a little lower than I would like, I think it plays very well to the old school style. Not quite as concentrated and complex as better vintages can be, this is still nevertheless an archetypal top-shelf pre-premox white Burgundy. Very, very impressive.

Opulent, ripe and powerful with sesame, honey, orchard fruit and caramalized butter. Upfront and pleasing with sufficient acidity. Fresh and vibrant palate, perhaps only missing a bit of complexity if Leflaives grand cru in better vintage. Very good.

Not the best representation of this wine. A bit monolithic.
