  • Funky, rustic nose has some barnyard and sour cherry. Light to medium body, with persistent acidity. Mature fruit, including unripened raspberries, sour cherries and fig. Hint of smoky ash(?) that I remember from other Listan Negro wines. This is STILL pretty cool.

  • The nose has developed a strong black pepper component with jammy fruits. The palate is also interesting with a bit of jam black pepper again coming through and light acidity and tannins on the finish. I wouldn't wait any longer to drink it but still holds interest.

  • Did not last this many years. A shame. Very good last time I tried it. Not all wines are made for storing.

  • I found this bottle several years ago at local wine store. Since I have never seen wine from the Canary Islands (and never tasted its indigenous grapes), I had to try it.
This wine has a medium ruby color and a nose of roses, red fruit, honey, and cedar. It tastes old world with notes of olive juice and cedar wood, along with strawberries, raspberries, tart cherries and pepper. Overall, the wine is complex and medium bodied with a moderate finish.

[The bottle label and producer's web site claims that this wine is produced from a combination 100 year old vines, medium aged vines, and young vines. Approximately 90% is Listan Negro and 10% is Tintilla. These grapes are grown on clay loam volcanic soil from the slopes of the very active volcano, Teide, at altitudes from 400 to 650 meters. The name of this wine comes from seven vineyards in the DO of Valle de la Orotava, where they source their grapes. Each component is fermented separately in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks before blending. Approximately 90% of the blend is aged for 12 months in small concrete tanks and the remaining 10% is aged for 12 months in 500 liter French Oak casks.]

(Suertes del Marqués Valle de la Orotava 7 Fuentes) Dark cherry red color with pale meniscus; appealing, lifted, aromatic, VA, light brett, cherry flavored hooka tobacco, juniper berry nose; silky textured, spice, fennel, dried cherry, tobacco, mineral, light white pepper palate with good acidity; medium-plus finish (90% Listan Negro, 10% Tintilla; 90% 12 months in small concrete tanks, 10% 12 months in 500 litre French oak; at about $21, a great bargain on a very complex, characterful wine) 92+ points
