  • Funky, rustic nose has some barnyard and sour cherry. Light to medium body, with persistent acidity. Mature fruit, including unripened raspberries, sour cherries and fig. Hint of smoky ash(?) that I remember from other Listan Negro wines. This is STILL pretty cool.

  • The nose has developed a strong black pepper component with jammy fruits. The palate is also interesting with a bit of jam black pepper again coming through and light acidity and tannins on the finish. I wouldn't wait any longer to drink it but still holds interest.

  • Did not last this many years. A shame. Very good last time I tried it. Not all wines are made for storing.

  • I found this bottle several years ago at local wine store. Since I have never seen wine from the Canary Islands (and never tasted its indigenous grapes), I had to try it.
This wine has a medium ruby color and a nose of roses, red fruit, honey, and cedar. It tastes old world with notes of olive juice and cedar wood, along with strawberries, raspberries, tart cherries and pepper. Overall, the wine is complex and medium bodied with a moderate finish.

[The bottle label and producer's web site claims that this wine is produced from a combination 100 year old vines, medium aged vines, and young vines. Approximately 90% is Listan Negro and 10% is Tintilla. These grapes are grown on clay loam volcanic soil from the slopes of the very active volcano, Teide, at altitudes from 400 to 650 meters. The name of this wine comes from seven vineyards in the DO of Valle de la Orotava, where they source their grapes. Each component is fermented separately in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks before blending. Approximately 90% of the blend is aged for 12 months in small concrete tanks and the remaining 10% is aged for 12 months in 500 liter French Oak casks.]

  • Really love this wine. This has "old-world" written all over it. Earthy, loamy scents hover on top of the dried red fruit. Nice entry on the palate with a medium balanced finish. Reminded me of some Tuscan wines with the olive notes. Great find at a steal for $19.99

  • Un vin d'une grande fraîcheur, sans jamais négliger la matière. J'ai hâte à mes deux autres!

  • After the funky barnyard nose blew off it was eucalyptus on the nose and medium weight fruits with a touch of savory on the palate. Reminded me a lot of the 2011 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso that I had earlier this year (although that was terminally eucalyptus in my view - I know, I know, a lot of you really like that wine, one friend even emailed me a special invitation to visit the winery after my review, but go to Australia if you want eucalyptus and leave it out of these bottles....). ANYWAY, after more time in oxygen the savory notes grew stronger and the bottle quickly disappeared into thirsty mouths.

  • Russk PPPh and Simone at Peter's. Nose of young rhone or PN, not that great. Nice mid-weight mouth. 90-

  • Euro-Themed Lunch - Island Theme (Corsica, Canary Island, Sicily, Cyprus) (Donato Enoteca, Redwood City, CA): Corked nose. Excellent palate underneath.

  • Medium ruby. Lean and light. Very briary black fruit and thyme, flinty and mineral with a bit of pepper. Interesting for sure.

  • I was intrigued by the email I received from an Internet wine shop I do some business with. A wine from the Canary Islands with grapes I never heard of now that is something I have to try. I am glad I did jump on it and ordered two bottles. I am not very good at describing the exact flavor profile but this wine tasted like nothing I ever had before which is the fun thing. It had some minerals and fruits laced with some floral scents. Really enjoyed it.

  • Exiting and different wine. This mostly unknown grape-variety gives me lots and lots of honey on the nose, and also a bit on the palate. Left some of the bottle for two days in a cold room with a cork in it, but it was dead. Completely oxidized and dull after the wait. So drink up! This will not get better!

  • Very very intense scent of bee-honey. Almost too much on the nose. The palate is sweet and very well balanced in the mouth. This is something new I've never tasted before. Wonderful! Rebuy; absolutely!

  • Weird as they come. 90% listan negro, 10% tintilla. 90% aged for 12 months in concrete vats and 10% in large French oak barrels based on the label. According to the salesman, some of the vines are 100 years old. An intensely vinous nose that benefits from at least a half hour of aeration. Dark red berries with a lingering sweetness in the nose, somewhere between fresh maple syrup and honey. Smoky minerality that suggests the presence of volcanic soil, though I wouldn't be able to tell you the terroir of Tenerife if you tortured me. There seemed to be a little volatile acidity in the nose initially that subsided with air. Substantial in the mouth, round, sweet (not literally but with a decided ripeness) with flavors of dark red and blue fruits, leather and a big thick vein of dusty energetic minerality. Finishes with a round mouthfilling presence tinged with lingering impressions of bitterness. I had to leave this note for a while to go look up listan negro in Jancis Robinson's big book of grapes.

I'm back. Listan negro is indigenous to the Canaries, its principal red grape, and unrelated genetically to palomino fino, which I guess caused some past confusion. Soil is "greyish volcanic", so score one for the home team.

  • Nice young style fruit forward red here...decent acid and light but coating tannin. Wake up your palate. Bright fruit that is cherry/blackberry. A touch sour. Nice experience and good price and will drink well i think over next few years.

  • Quite weak and light red color. Spicy and fruity. Also some pepper, which makes it remind me about a Rhône wine. Intense and long aftertaste. Very good!
