This bottle was in remarkable shape. It opened with a pop and poured out a pleasant pale salmon colour. The nose was complex and showed notes of smoked meats, strawberry, cherry, caramel, white mushroom and truffle. It was full and rich in the mouth with outstanding detail of red fruits and chalk. The finish was long and tangy and it acquitted itself well with quail with pomegranate and was also right at home with roasted pork belly.

Dom Ruinart Tasting (St Quentin, Knightsbridge): From Magnum Very dark amber / gold Less oxidation, sits together a lot better on the nose Rich well developed, much more acidity retained than the 1986 Palate shows burnt sugar and marmalade, some ripeness of fruit, well balanced Showing very well right now
