  • A promising nose gave way to too much heat for my taste. There was still some nice black fruit and touch of spice, so it didn't lack enjoyment entirely, just a little awkward and hot.

  • Purchased pretty recently and without having any idea of how it had been treated, so this might not be the best example if you have been carefully cellaring this. It has a hugely floral nose, which sadly leads to a sense of over-promising. This gained some weight with air, but was a little thin, particularly in the mid-palate. With its age, there was an emphasis on spice and and earthier secondary notes, which felt out of place given the bouquet. The finish was redeemingly assertive, with red fruits kicking near the end. It faded with a bit of alcohol, but nothing terrible. I think I caught this particular bottle a few years into its decline, but it was still very enjoyable. Despite being a bit thin, it still held up to some very hearty food, from richly prepared octopus to beef wellington.

  • Intense black cherry aromas with lots of anise. Same ripe black fruit flavors, overall still very fresh, with charmingly subtle spice. A bit more lush than I normally expect from 15 yo Barolo, also with a bit more heat on finish than I'd expect.

  • Cellar Raid (Extra Space, Singapore): This was a really nice, maturing Barolo. It had a lush, lovely nose, with layers of dark cherries and damson plums, damp earth and undergrowth nuances, smoky spice and dried flower petal aromas, a little toss of ash and tar - really wonderful stuff. The palate was still rather young of course, cloaked as it was with a slightly raspy, but clearly softening layer of Barolo tannins. However, it had already started to drink quite well. There was a nice ring of freshness and a lovely balance that belied the 14.5% alcohol on the sticker. Great flavours too, very masculine, with meaty flavours, spicy tobacco and umami mushrooms notes forming a savoury backdrop for fleshy dark fruit flavours with a waft of flowers at the sides. The finish was as strong as the rest of the wines, flushed with sour plums and seasoned by earthy, spicy, ever so slightly chocalatey nuances. So enjoyable now - this should be smashing in another 4 to 5 years.

  • Evidence of age/bricking. Nose has more alcohol than I might prefer. Lots of fruit, rose petal, no residual tannins, very smooth and polished mouthfeel. Very much in its drinking window at this point. My only bottle, and I feel like I got it right for a change!
