Monthly Tasting Group HWS: Clos des Papes (By AH): Drank from magnum. Beautiful bouquet with ripe dark berries and good garrigue. Same on the palate. Very juicy and still powerful beautiful acidity and round tannin. Some licorice in the taste as well. A very beautiful wine at its peak and with still a few years of future.

It's funny looking at the pro reviews. Parker and Dunnuck both go with red fruits; Raynolds goes with blue and black. I gotta go with Raynolds: I'm picking up blueberry and boysenberry and precious little red fruits. Layers and layers of succulent, fresh blueberry, with oak spice, and a hint of lavender to keep the blue theme going. Not much else. Plush, dense, rich mouthfeel, fills the crevices, but not particularly heavy or syrupy. I can't taste the 16% alcohol, but I can feel it later. Showy and impressive, but not what I would call typical for the region.

Really lush and sweet, almost like a Port or an Amarone - this was perhaps too much for Don - but I enjoyed the deep spice cake and raisin qualities.

Similar notes as my previous bottle. It needed 30-60 minutes in a decanter.
