level lowermost neck, good cork, very good black-cherry-red colour for age with only slightest brown at rim, powerful, rich, fine nose with a hint of the green vegetal character I associate with St Estephe and the northern Haut Medoc, palate of warm rich fruit balanced by the typical ‘86 austerity toward the finish, in this case really complementary, overall a top ‘86, a positive surprise considering the standing of this Cru - at least in this vintage it was clearly underestimated in its youth

level uppermost shoulder, colour has some brown but still good for age, lovely complex, fine, nuanced, meaty nose with the elegance of age, palate also excellent, perfect balance with enough acidity and tannin at the finish to keep it lifted and fresh, sufficient fruit to counterbalance the inherent austerity of the ‘86 vintage, real length and persistence, the quality at this stage is way above it’s reputation at the time it was bought en primeur, punching above its weight

the last bottle was corked, this was just excellent, good level, long good cork, some brown but still lively, superb nose, really fine and complex, with restrained power, smoothness of age on palate, perfect balance, lovely wine and a reaffirmation after the previous off bottle, has the structure of ‘86 but more balancing fruit than many.

3 hour decant, level lowermost neck, good long saturated cork, only slight brown at the rim, lovely rich, meaty, classic St Estephe nose, palate has lots of structure as typical of ‘86 but also sufficient rich fruit, still quite dry and relatively austere, held its own very well against roast leg of NZ lamb, has the bite to counteract the sweet fatty character of lamb, very enjoyable indeed and with remarkable vigour still for 33 years of age, only 12.5% alc.
