I found it hard to decide tonight whether to go Burgundy or Barolo, and as it happens this was quite a Nebbiolo-esque Burgundy. Relatively dark in colour, and medium-bodied, it was nevertheless obvious from the first sniff that this was at the brisk end of the Burgundy spectrum; the acidity made it work well to accompany lamb shoulder, but less of a joy to finish the bottle off on the sofa. I wouldn't describe this wine as at all green, but it did feel a bit pinched on the mid-palate. That actually got more noticeable with air - perhaps 91/92 for my first glass and 89/90 for my last - so I fear this wine may fade out rather than blossom (although who knows with Burgundy?!).

Tasted against an Oregon Pinot, 2012 Domaine Serene Yamhill Cuvée using Corovin, so effectively PnP. I see several notes being negative on this wine, but no recent ones. A couple of years ago they were probably right, but the 2011s drink very well now and this was actually one of the best red Burgs I have had in this price class. The nose is open and now and sophisticated. On the palate it has the amazing smoothness of the best red Burgundies; there is not that layered complexity you get from the Grand Crus, but the fruit is intense and the finish is very long. Absolutely delightful now.

Rimelig glad jeg hoppet over rød 2011.
