Deep dark purple color. A big wine. A bit of alcohol initially but it blew off quickly. Lots of earth, tobacco and licorice, with beautiful complexity. Blueberries and eucalyptus. Balancing the big fruit is a good dose of acidity and tannins in the background. This will easily go another 20 years and it will be fascinating to see how it develops.

Winter in Wineland; 1/14/2017-1/20/2017 (Sonoma & Napa): Drank this at the winery and the tasting was very much focused on more geographical tasting than flavors. This wine was described as gravity which I understand as for me the flavors really lit up along my jawbone. The tannins are softer here, but certainly still present. I get lots of red fruit - currant, darker cherry... with time maybe cranberry and just a touch of the sourness that goes with that. In the beginning it was more peppery but that seemed to evole to more of a baking spice. Nice wine. Not as approachable as I remember other Melbury's being, but very enjoyable.

The nose is expressive with notes of baking spice, smoke, cassis and cedar. It is sweet and round in the mouth with some refreshing red fruit notes and a little sour cherry. There’s sweet tobacco and it has tannins that are spherical but there is some chew to the finish.

Decanted 1 hr. Open from the get. Dark, brooding fruit. Inky purple color with a smooth, silky texture. What a wine.
