  • Tward’s most recent note below describes this very well. In addition we will say, there is, as seems typical with the wines of this era from this house, a slight and pleasant sauvage character. Very enjoyable over three nights.

  • With so much activity going on in preparation for Thanksgiving, I never took time to note this, so my Aug. 2019 TN will need to stand. That said, based on that prior experience I decided to decant this for a few hours this time and it worked out great. Loved this. It has a smoky thread and an autumnal feel with cool, damp earth, decaying leaf, and still some baked berries, dark cherry, and minerality. Lovely stuff and a really solid buy a few years ago in the mid-$30s USD.

  • This was a bit of a wild ride, interesting. At first and at times throughout I thought I got some VA and the wine had a "low intervention" feel as many of the hip popular wines. It evolved in interesting ways, showing soy, iron, blood, smoke, red cherry, ozone, wet granite and volcanic sulfur at times, never any of them dominating or being too strong. It was a fun wine to drink with food (working very well with grilled lamb sirloin) and sometimes challenging on its own. I'm still not sure if I'm glad or not that I have another bottle. I thought this was a very nice wine, but one that oscillates around its core rather than staying in balance if that makes sense.

  • 2011 Bertheau, two Santenays and two aged Rieslings: Purplish red. In the nose, it's quite powerful with more power than finesse, some oak, but also nice floral and red berry notes (red currant, raspberry). More harmonic than three months earlier, but not 100% at ease. On the palate, it's very structured, linear, finely woven. Breaks down suddenly in the finish. There's good substance, but this is not a wine to drink young, it seems.
