  • Ullage was mid shoulder , cork slipped into bottle while trying to extract the cork , not a good sign!

Back label gives the following information
The 1979 vintage was one of the great years for Coonawarra, warm even temperatures produced a light crop of cabernet sauvignon grapes with excellent acid balance and fruit development the wine has all the features of a true aristocrat beautiful colour splendid Cabernet fruit nose and soft fruity intense flavour it is excellent drinking now and has cellaring potential to improve for at least 10 years just as the 1963 vintage was regarded as one of the great whites of the 60s the 1979 vintage will be seen as one of the great red wine of the 70s

This is a multi trophy and gold medal winner
This wine received equal top points in the 1980 Jimmy Watson trophy class at Royal Melbourne Wine Show

Colour mid garnet with ruby flashes amber edges but as the wine received aeration this amber/orange tones gave to more red tones
Nose Med intensity mature aromas a lot of ‘brown’ notes including caramel, licorice, and a lot of still-charry oak. Behind all that though, you can see browning cassis. No off aromas
There is a sense on anticipation ,wondering what it will taste like, such mixed signals on nose 26/30
Palate med bodied is rich and strong, an amazing volume of ripe to over-ripe browning cassisy berry pointing to high actual cabernet, plus dark toasty oak, and a very long silky finish with no drying tannins 39/44’
Overall this wine is now 40 years old , showing beautiful balance and complexity for a fully matured wines . I have been sipping on this for close on 2 hours now and a lot of those old tried aromas have now disappeared and dare I say a hint of red fruit appearing !
    The rewards of patience! 9/11
