Screwcap. Badly damaged label. Level was extremely high - about where the cap meets the collar. Strong nose of mint and red capsicum over a background of charcoal and blackberry. Palate is full-bodied, with lots of soft, silky-smooth tannin. Leathery, mildly astringent finish. Strong flavours of old leather, cassis, pencil lead, and eucalyptus. This is very typical of Coonawarra Cabernet, which usually starts out with intense flavour and tannin; at 17 years old, this has retained much of its flavour (largely due, no doubt, to the superior closure), but the tannin has softened.
