  • Nice mature nose. Slight cherry still noticeable mingled with cedar, leather, black tea, slight coffee notes and a hint of eucalyptus. And iron minirality. The palate is silky and balanced. Spicy notes mingle with hints of cedar and leather still has noticeable fruit mid palate. Mouth feel is full with slight iron mineral and a nice lingering finish.

  • The Great Barolo Tasting (Taberna): Mature and lovely - this was my favourite wine of the flight. It stood out immediately from amongst the 1989s that surrounded it, but while clearly older, it was no less alive or vibrant than its younger cousins. There was a nice patina of maturity on the nose, with lovely umami driven scents of dried mushrooms and cured meat and shades of earth along with fragrant notes of red fruit and dried flowers. Very nice. The palate was round and mellow, still nicely structured, but in a silkily elegant way, with lovely fresh acidity playing more of a role in keeping the wine sprightly than its softened tannins. It had lovely mellow flavours too, with a gentle complexity almost glowing though sweet tones of red fruit wed to earth and spice and meat winding its way into a long, velvety finish. A complete wine, beautifully integrated and wonderfully resolved. This was a great Barolo drinking at its delicious peak.

  • Meaty umami tones, black tea, leather, dry tones, nicely aged and mature but still powerful and holding well, a very strong vintage.

  • Not often does a bottle exceed my expectations, but this one certainly did so, and by a wide margin. I was told that this bottle had a layer of olive oil in it (peculiar, supposed to be an anti-oxidant?), I used a turkey baster to remove the top 1/2 inch (worked well). Decanted into a few containers, the bottle cleaned of the muck, and the wine returned. Consumed about 1 hour later. Burgundy is what hit me; rose petals yes, but the sweet cherry taste of maybe a fully resolved Romanee St. Vivant. I loved this bottle of wine. Fantastic stuff, great nose, delicious, gulpable, the bottle (5 bottle, bottle) vanished among the 9 dinner guests in a very short order. Wish I had another. Ready to go today....
