  • 100% Ruchè. Fermented spontaneously, bottled unfined and unfiltered. 13% alcohol. Tasted in a Rinaldi Rosae 2019-2011 vertical.

Deep and somewhat translucent black cherry color color. Quite fragrant but also quite dry and savory nose with vaguely green-toned aromas of brambly blackberries, some minty lift, a little bit of salty liquorice, light boysenberry tones, perfumed hints of wild flowers and aromatic herbs and a faint touch of eucalyptus. The nose here is very lovely, but also somewhat atypical and very singular in our vertical tasting. The wine feels dry, somewhat restrained and medium-bodied on the palate with slightly understated flavors of crunchy chokeberries and crowberries, some sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of sanguine meaty character, light sweet notes of ripe boysenberries, a lifted hint of ethery VA and a floral touch of violets. The structure relies mostly on the high acidity as the medium-minus tannins pack some grip but are rather light and friendly as a whole. Overall the wine shows good sense of freshness. The finish is dry, quite long and somewhat grippy with crunchy flavors of crowberries and tart cranberries, some floral notes of violets and roses, a little bit of ferrous blood, light funky notes of leather and phenolic spice and a light hint of sour cherry bitterness.

A wonderfully fresh and sophisticated vintage of Rosae that shows good sense of balance and precision. Unfortunately the wine feels both slightly restrained and a bit underwhelming, especially when drunk between the rather sinewy and muscular 2013 and the concentrated and quite voluptuous 2011. This 2012 shows lovely acidity and lots of nuance in the flavors, but lacks the intensity and oomph that the best vintages of Rosae can show. It is certainly possible that the wine is in a slump now and will emerge much better after some additional cellaring, but I doubt this vintage will ever reach the impressive intensity of vintages like 2016 and 2013. Although a bit on the light side, this wine is nevertheless really harmonious, enjoyable and truly text-book in style. Based on how the wine doesn't show any aged character yet, I can imagine this will continue to improve wonderfully for years more. Recommended.

  • Flowers and perfume on the nose. Fresh and fruity like a Dolcetto, with fine tannins and good acidity.
