A vintage port that shows true pedigree and style, the 2004 is still very young but already revealing tremendous potential. Dark ruby-violet with a nose that centers on sweet red currents with just a hint of mint, but already reveals the exotic blend of spices that will someday dominate here. A slightly oxidized, musky note detracts but should be absorbed over time. On the palate, fresh and tangy, very long with impressive minerality. 97 may be a bit low, but that oxidation concerns me a little. Potential for a higher score if it indeed resolves as the wine ages — this is 20 years from even early maturity.
Broader remark: I can’t rule out that this bottle might have had some kind of cork flaw that isn’t evident, but let’s just assume it is in pristine condition. I bought it under seemingly ideal conditions from a good source. That has me wondering about the oxidative aroma and in turn, wondering if this is how I would want to spend $450 per bottle. If the price feels steep to you, don’t go for the 2004. True, this is Nacional and it has a special meaning. But the actual port is edged out by the 1994 Fonseca, and totally distanced by Graham in 2003 and 2001, to say nothing of the mature Graham 1985. Taylor has been nailing it too. So maybe this is just a bit too pricey for the juice in the bottle…
There was just something a little raw to the nose at first. It has a core of super sweet and intense blackberries. There’s some Indian spice and licorice too. It is deep, long and supremely youthful.
