This pours light garnet in the glass with light bricking, good color for the age. Good fill level on this bottle. The nose isn't super expressive or complex but whats there is appealing. Aromas gently waft autumn foliage, sweet cedar mulch, dried cherry, brown mushroom, and dry soil. The palate similarly shows dried fruit on entry with medium minus tannin and medium acid. The finish is moderate in length showing the mulchy notes of the nose. All in all this is enjoyable but not anything particularly remarkable. Worth noting it did get better as it got more air, so I'd recommend a couple of hours or more.

PNP into Luopai Wuguan Universal glass (“Root” day): Medium bright ruby.
Very nice nose of mature fruits like strawberries, red cherries, vegetal ans savoury notes, some elegant mints and menthol, a lot of sou bois. Has a fair bit of depth too.
More impressive on the nose than on the palate. Fairly good integration and quite a bit silky tannins.
93 points.

Dark-colored wine with little fading. Really funky nose of dark cherries, barnyard and ether. A really masculine style of Burgundy with firm structure but nicely balanced by meaty black fruits combined with that funky barnyard thing. Literally tastes like a black hole and there is a lot going on in this young and powerful Volnay. Finishes quite concentrated and complex with a strong black mineral content. A fascinating wine that is quite different from any other Volnay I've tasted. Seems like it should still improve as it sheds its black cloak of pinot tannins. Drunk at Veritas, NYC.
