  • Medium nose does not show dessert style, red fruited, hint of earth, orange zest. Palate gives candied fruit, but balance, lovely acidity, quite a bit of grip to it, black plum, hint of chocolate. Good pairing wine.

  • 12 Chapoutier Banyuls
    Day 3

Deep red. Good cork- 1/8th even soak.

Very sweet nose of moscatels, molasses, cola syrup, and soft Allen’s liquorice black strap.

On entry it’s bright red, prune, and orange citrus rind fruited. Alcohol is in check, and the liquorice and rancio and oak notes really come to the fore.

The medium weight fortified pulls up dry and tannic, with a very clear acid line cleaning up any sweetness yet landing and then expanding with a lovely dark chocolate, burnt brown sugar and nutty aged rancio character and mixed dried fruit finish- esp orange and lemon skins. Only a touch malty and heady through the excellent length.

This is very much in the zone. It will hold for 5 more years at least, but it does not have the stuffing to go further in my (limited!) experience with Banyuls and it’s delicious now.

Very good, 92. Now to 5. Better than I recall the last bottle. I noted and scored before looking at my last note.

  • Under $15 from Dan Murphys. Insane value. Still very young- deep red colour, fresh red fruit and chocolatey flavour, clean spirit and nice balance. Fruit driven tannins. Cork soak 1/4, wait another 7 years to drink remaining.

  • The QPR is what makes this really good. Chapoutier really does a good wine. This was $10AUD from Dan Murphy's and to be frank was actually pretty good. Not nearly as complex as the LBV and Ruby Ports that were next to it, but at that price it was good. People really enjoyed it, and the lovely vibrant fresh fruit start.

  • Have to disagree on this one, perhaps it was due to bottle variation, but this was excellent. Went very well with chocolate as one would expect from Banyuls, but was outstanding with a cherry clafoutis that we had for dessert. Great balance between fruit and acidity.
