revisit one year later: same purple velvet color; abundant cherry and oak aroma; medium-bodied mouth feel, green pepper taste, medium-length finish with chocolate spice tannins; overall: better -- more balanced, less awkward and chalky -- and not yet at its peak
8/10/14 - 82 pts - color: purple velvet; nose: abundant dark cherry and a touch of earthiness; taste: medium-to-full bodied mouth feel, rounded green-tinged fruit taste, medium-length peppery green finish with some chalkiness; overall: interesting, aromatic Old World juice with lots of stuffing, but still immature, awkward, and tight -- its best days are ahead

Revisiting my enthusiastic review of 8/9/14. Having popped several bottles since then, there has been extreme bottle variation, in spite of all bottles having come from the same 12-bottle case and cellared together. While some have been very good (see 8/9 notes), others (like this one) seemed watered down and tasted off. Sampled blind, I would have guessed them to be from different producers in different vintages. Advise caution with these, even at their $7 tariff.

This was a very unpleasant wine. It was unbalanced and tasted of Welch's with alcohol added. We've had other Kirkland wines that were enjoyable, but this one missed the mark.

At $7 a pop, this is one to buy by the case; make that two cases. I'm unsure of how successful 2012 was in the CdR, but it must have been pretty good if this humble offering is any indication. Very deep and dark in the glass with substantial legs. First whiff is smokey, with sweetened cranberries and red raspberries, which follows through to the finish. Some peachy and stoney notes peek in and out, as well.
Granted, I tend to get poetic in my scoring when I find something worthwhile in the under-$10 range; others might score this a notch or two lower. But this has nice stuffins. If I owned a restaurant I'd lose the Kirkland bottles and serve en carafe as my house wine. Will please both the Francophile and Californophile. Enjoy through 2015 to capture the luscious fruit.

Nice simple Rhone, great value for the price. The kind of wine I like to buy by the case for Tuesday night meals.
