A disappointing bottle. Decanted around 3PM and returned to the bottle for dinner at 8PM. Maybe too much air? Never really opened and spread out. Had that disjointed balsamic note that is neither here nor there. Herbal and somewhat astringent notes took away from the fruit. Maybe my expectations were too high.

Closed is the best way to describe this classic, and possibly immortal, Barolo. The Brovia Rocche was so close in aromatics to the Vietti of the same vintage that you might mistake the two in a blind tasting. Here, the fruit was a dark red with hints of dusty spice and floral undergrowth. On the palate, intense, dried cherry and floral tones developed yet were held back by a still youthful structure. Tannin mounted on the finish, but the fruit here is focused and in no danger of fading. This was a beautiful wine but nowhere near ready to drink.

Starting to show a little bricking but still quite powerful and chewy at the core. Aromas of dark berries and underbrush give way to black olive and pine resin and then the classic rose and tar ultimately shows through. On the palate this initially seems lean but it puts on weight in the glass. Still structured, the black cherry fruit has started to evolve into secondary characteristics of truffle, smoke, and mineral elements with a little cool menthol to give this a very understated quality. A very nice wine with quite a few years left.
