Vinous 2019 Barolo Masterclass (The Pool Restaurant, NYC): [From a magnum at the La Festa del Barolo Saturday lunch. This mag was leftover from the Gala dinner the night before. So it had been open at least 20 hours.] Still young, but rich and fragrant. A mix of dark red and black fruit on the nose with hints of spice. Full bodied and rich in the mouth. Long finish. Still needs time, but delicious now, especially with the hamburger.

Clear bright red with a hint of orange at the rim. Mulberry and stewed plums on the nose with underpinning tar and black treacle, streaks of menthol and pine, roasted nuts too. Nicely resolved on the palate though with a few spikes of peppery tannin. Still fresh, in secondary phase and probably peak maturity. Excellent though not truly exciting.

Tasted 20 minutes after opening. Not decanted. Spent 20 minutes or so with the glass.
Elegant, understated aromatics. Not closed, just very relaxed. Soft mature fruit, lavender, a little truffle. Not very tertiary, but beginning to show small nuances of truffles and tobacco leaf. A wine of sophistication and elegance rather than power or exuberant aromatics.
Still well structured, but not hard or edgy.

Dinner with Marius (Trier, Germany): Opened, decanted, and served. Deeper tint than the Mascarello. Heady, swirling aromas of red fruit, herb, and tobacco leaf. Elegant, flowing, and supple on the palate with gorgeous, delicate fruit and that strong tobacco note. Much less structure to resolve than the Monprivato. Outstanding tonight if not profound.

Decanted 1.5 hrs. The is still a tannic wine. I will wait to try again 2026. Drink 2026 to 2028.
