Took 3 1996 G.C. Burgs to dinner last night. Burguet V.V., Raphet Combottes and Laurent Clos St Jacques. All bought upon release, all perfectly stored, all decanted off the sediment about 4 hours before serving, shown an hour of air and put back in the bottle. All 3 showed beautifully and true to their pedigree. The burguet was highly extracted, fully mature with lots of life left, and fairly pedestrian as would be expected from a village wine. The Raphet is a wine I have had on 6 previous occasions and love. Elegant, lovely floral nose, complex with a long finish. Singing right now. The Laurent is from old vine fruit (from fruit bought from fourrier?) and showed more oak than the more "classic" style of Burgundy. I was a bit worried that this "experiment" was not going to turn out well. I can now comfortably report that, while a distinct style, I like these wines very much. This version is very extracted and concentrated but retains a lot of elegance. DL's wines are all marked by oak, but it is well integrated. This was the favorite of most of the tasters.
My take away from this most recent exercise is that the '96's are long lived wines and in many cases just coming into their own. This bodes well for all us Burgundy lovers who own well stored, well made '96 Burgs from quality producers. YumYum.

Beautifully resolved tannins and nice structure, with elements of reduced red fruits and a touch of gamey meat. I wish I could locate more bottles. Traded for this years ago. In prime drinking window now. Liquid silk.

Great fruit. Everyone liked this a tad more than the 96 clos vougeot.

Secondary aromas and flavors (marinated meats) have become quite prominent. High acidity. Weighty, masculine style.
